Opinion | Marjorie Taylor Greene’s impeachment stunt wrecks a big MAGA myth

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions ... migration/
In the run-up to the expiration of covid-19 restrictions on those seeking asylum, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene repeatedly predicted that our country would be overrun by migrant hordes from the south. Hundreds of thousands would “rush the border,” the Georgia Republican proclaimed, warning of an “Imminent Invasion!”

Since the Title 42 border policy ended last week, the average number of migrants crossing the border has dropped. Yet Greene hasn’t missed a beat: On Thursday, she introduced impeachment articles against President Biden, proclaiming that the supposed migrant invasion is central to her case. She raged: “He is a direct threat to our national security.”

This disconnect captures a truth about today’s MAGA-fied GOP: The idea that our border is under perpetual siege isn’t intended as an empirical declaration about a concrete challenge facing the country. Rather, it’s a kind of animating myth, one manufactured to mobilize political energy. In this, it’s essential to MAGA’s identity.

[...]

Greene and other Republicans were plainly salivating at the prospect of a large spike of migrant arrivals after the Title 42 policy ended. We can surmise this because now that this spike hasn’t materialized, House Republicans are finding all kinds of creative new ways to simply pretend that it has.

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), for instance, raged at CNN for posting border-crossing numbers and claiming there’s been “still no surge” after the border policy’s end. But CNN was right: The numbers did show a drop.

Still another House Republican tweeted a video of migrants storming the border to depict Biden’s supposed failure to prepare for Title 42’s end. In fact, the video was months old and depicted an isolated group misled by disinformation about the border, which says nothing about Title 42.

Meanwhile, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) responded to the drop in crossings by demanding more concessions from Democrats on immigration. Among far-right Republicans, after the post-Title 42 surge failed to materialize, support for impeaching Mayorkas actually grew.

[...]

The GOP addiction to border invasion imagery is such that many Republicans can see migrant children — once worthy of bipartisan assistance — only as a threat to be repulsed. They want to impeach Mayorkas — and possibly Biden — partly over a border surge that hasn’t happened. All this comes as Republicans regularly hold border photo-ops in buffoonish military gear and spend huge sums on ads depicting the border as something out of an apocalyptic video game.

The fantasy that the border is constantly in chaos has become a marker of MAGA identity. It’s a myth that MAGA Republicans want “border security” that is genuinely achievable or see the border as a policy problem to be solved in any meaningful sense. The border crisis, or at least the version that Greene and her cohorts keep invoking, exists largely in the collective MAGA imagination.
tl;dr - It's a grifty, culty griftcult. Nothing less, nothing more. Rubes are both consumer and producer.

Yesterday was the first time I realized maybe I am not as compassionate as I think I am and I guess I must be an asshole - in this regard...

I took/walked the long route home after work so I could stop by a grocery store.
I walked towards the migrant "shelter" which is actually a decent hotel. I may post pics later.

As I was walking east on Ohio Street some kids on bikes and scooters zoomed by me on the sidewalk.
I looked closely and they appeared to be "migrants". Whatever.
Then as I walked closer towards the hotel I felt as if I was in a foreign land. People everywhere. Sitting on the sidewalk, standing around, sitting on the benches at bus stops, etc. All appeared to be migrants.
I walked closer to the hotel and wtf? People eating good/expensive chicken, good/expensive pizza, nice fruit. Some talking/"face timing" on cell phones, etc., smiling, laughing, having a good ole' time.
My first thought was, gee - why would these people want to find jobs and work when they can sit outside and enjoy a beautiful day while they get fed well, can live in a decent hotel, be given clothing, obviously be able to use cell phones, their kids get gifts, etc.
Why wouldn't they encourage their friends and family members back home to "migrate"? The USA truly is paradise. Right?

Then I thought to myself, my tax paying ass had to fill out paperwork yesterday because I sold a pair of shoes on StockX that put me over the "tax line". I had to work 9 hours yesterday. I had to pay $10 for less than a pound of chicken. I walked back to my $2500+ a month "decent" but not "great" apartment. I changed out of my clothes I had to pay for. I logged on my computer and turned on my TV that I pay $300 a month for wifi and cable for, etc., etc., etc.

For ME, living in Chicago in 2023, maybe it is better to be a "migrant" than to be a "natural citizen"?

related, abbot’s floating balls are being challenged by Mexico

they should be getting challenged by conservation and animal rights groups as well, as they represent a significant threat of drowning for ANY animal trying to cross the river

Reported deaths. As stated above, Texas does its own security in places. The hysteria over migrants infects the nation.

The last reasonable chance for immigration reform died when Marco Rubio couldn't hope to win the republican nomination for president in 2016 and continue to support the bill he had partially written with the gang of eight in the senate in 2015.

And now, like Roe v Wade before it, republicans have no desire to help solve a problem that gives them cart blanche to access the billfolds and stimulate the secretion of neurotransmitters in the lizard-brains of their cult on an inexhaustible, and recurring basis.

It's yet one more reason why our country can't have nice things.

It's not hysteria. Floods of migrants have been causing problems for nations all over the world.

We don't need that here

Love the use of "migrant" as a euphemism for "people invading our country illegally." Straight out of Orwell.

Which is a better response:

to make some point about how people have been invading this country for centuries before Orwell was a thing?

Or to make some Jesus point like, for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you said, “no way bro, I couldn’t possibly welcome you, not if you came here illegally!

I liken it to a lifeboat that is already overloaded and is in danger of sinking. Do you keep allowing people to get out of the water and into the boat because you feel bad for them, which guarantees that everybody will end up in the water, or do you encourage them to find another boat?

Last year was an eye-opening experience for me. My wife and I decided to see what it would be like to teach at a State university, so we lined up visiting professorships at a school in the Texas A&M system located in Laredo. It was by far the worst place I have ever lived. Laredo is right on the Mexican border, with thousands of people coming over from Nuevo Laredo every day to work and shop and live during the work week. The infrastructure is overwhelmed, everything is crowded all the time, and the utility system is continually in overload.

We rented a house in what used to be a nice neighborhood, where we were an anomaly. It was the two of us and our infant in a small three bedroom two bath house. All of our neighbors had six to eight cars in their driveways and lined up along the streets because they had ten to twelve people crammed into their similarly-sized houses - many of whom I'm sure were there illegally. They had people living in their garages with rigged up window A/C units running non-stop. The power went out on a regular basis, and the temperature was always at or near 100. As the other faculty at the university told us, we were technically in the United States, but in reality, we were living in Mexico. It was one iota above a Third World country in most respects.

Here's my point. We left because it was a horrible place to live, and the university continues to have difficulty attracting, hiring, and retaining faculty for that reason. I don't want to live like that, but if we continue to let uncontrolled streams of illegals come across our border, we will all be living that way eventually.

There are other countries to go to. We are at capacity. It's just reality.

Welcome to the republican-controlled state of Texas.

(We can only imagine what Gov DeFascist of FL will do in his manic effort to out "anti-woke" any and all of his fellow republican "Family Values", "Pro-life", "Christian Values" party, presidential challengers.)

July 18, 2023 Read the full email a Texas DPS trooper sent over concerns of alleged inhumane handling of migrants

...The email was sent to command staff earlier this month by a trooper working in Eagle Pass. In it, the trooper voices concern over alleged orders that were given when handling migrants at the border.

"...I believe we a have stepped over a line into the inhumane. We need to operate it correctly in the eyes of God. We need to recognize that these are people who are made in the image of God and need to be treated as such..."

...I want to inform you of some of the issues we had while working the operation as a Trooper Medic from 6/24/23 to 7/1/23 in Eagle Pass TX...

On 6/25/23 we went on patrol to see how many gates were locked on the fence line south of the casualty wire at approximately 2200. In while doing so we came across 120 people camped out along the fence line. In this group there was several small children and babies who were nursing. The entire group was exhausted hungry and tired. We called the shift officer in command, and we were given orders to push the people back into the water to go to Mexico. We decided that this was not the correct thing to do. With the very real potential of exhausted people drowning. We made contact with command again and expressed our concerns and we were given the order to tell them to go to Mexico and get into our vehicle and leave. After we left, members of the brush team coordinated with Border patrol and got the people processed and taken care of.

On 6/30/23 at approximately 1500 we had group of people at the casualty wire seeking refuge. In this group was a 4 year old female who attempted to cross the wire and was pressed back by Texas Guard soldiers due to the orders given to them. The temperature was well over 100 degrees. Shortly thereafter the 4 year old passed out due to exhaustion and a DPS Sgt and Texas Guard Soldier extricated the patient and transported to us. We provided treatment to the unresponsive patient and transferred care to EMS.

On 6/30/23 we had an adult male with a significant laceration in his left leg. We asked him what happened and he stated that he had a child who was stuck on a trap in the water. He said that there was a barrel that had casualty wire all over it and his child was stuck on it. He extricated his kid and while doing so the barrel trap lacerated his leg.

On 6/30/23 we had a 15 year old male child who while walking in the river due to the casualty wire being laid out in a manner that it forced him into the river where it is unsafe to travel. In while doing so he broke his right leg and his father carried him the rest of the way to the Rosetta gate. We then splinted the leg and transferred care to EMS.

On 6/30/23 at approximately 2130 while patrolling the casualty wire near Pecan Farms we came across a 19 year old female who was in obvious pain stuck in the casualty wire who was doubled over. We cut her out of the wire and medically assessed her. She was pregnant and was having a miscarriage. We promptly coordinated with Eagle Pass EMS and transferred care.

With the casualty wire running for several miles along the river in areas where it is easier for people to cross. It forces people to cross in other areas that are deeper and not as safe for people carrying kids and bags. On 7/1/23 at approximately 1630 we had reports from border patrol that there was a mother and two children struggling to cross the river. Our TMU boat team searched for the victims and found the mother and one child who went under the water for a minute. They rescued two of victims and started life saving measures. They were transferred to Eagle Pass EMS and were later called deceased at the hospital. The other child that Border Patrol saw was never found. In total 5 people drowned this week in the area of operation.

I truly believe in the mission of Operation Lone Star; I believe we a have stepped over a line into the in- humane. We need to operate it correctly in the eyes of God. We need to recognize that these are people who are made in the image of God and need to be treated as such. The casualty wire needs to provide protection to the state and provide a safe means of travel on solid land to proper collection points. The wire also needs to be manned and patrolled constantly to provide security for these families who are seeking refuge. The wire on the shore needs to be lighted at night so people can see the wire and not stumble into it as a trap. The wire and barrels in the river needs to be taken out as this is nothing but a in humane trap in high water and low visibility. Due to the extreme heat, the order to not give people water needs to be immediately reversed as well. I also believe that forcing refugees to cross back into Mexico vs getting them to Border Patrol is putting them back in the hands of the Cartels where they are assaulted robbed and raped. This plays into advantage of the Cartels as they can charge them again to cross them over. I say all of this in due respect and deep concern, thank you.

Editorial note: I believe in a secure border, but as the Tx patrolman said, this is "inhumane". The "richest country" in the world, the USA, doesn't need to stoop to this behavior. I don't even believe in a god, yet many of you claim to, but you're OK with this? This is not my America. You're doing this in my name, and I resent it. Stop and think! Fuck every republican who supports or is OK with this. Your silence is your approval.

One of the things we’re RICHEST on is the clear capacity for more people.
