This is likely too arcane for all but a few, but someone said they preferred to read "research", and this might have a practical application for that "few".
When the pandemic first started, I kept hearing, (among other risk factors), that "people with hypertension", high blood pressure, have a higher mortality rate due to COVID-19. Which can make sense, since high blood pressure is often accompanied by, (and/or causes), so many other cardiac, lung, circulatory, etc. health problems. But, hypertension is often not accompanied by any other health problems, so I had been wondering why high blood pressure alone might make you more susceptible to severe COVID-19 disease. It turns out that it might not be the blood pressure itself but the blood pressure medication that increases your likelihood of developing severe COVID-19.
Ace inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers may increase the risk of severe COVID-19

An article about the COVID-19 test itself and how it works. Also explains how South Korea had the stockpiles of chemicals for the test kits, because of previous experience with MERS.

What is the media going to do when we find out that the worldwide pandemic is going to be solved by a 70 year old malaria pill that costs about 25 cents a dose?
No money in that. Better let the FDA take 18 months to research it while we all sit at home and watch our country become a Third World sh*thole.

Sure they work. They also destroy mental health and there will be no economy to come back to. Seems like there's gotta be a reasonable middle ground somewhere.
Psych, you sound like the voice of
lockdown experience.
But even a
lockdown isn't a guarantee.
Not sure why you're attacking me personally for sharing my opinion, but if it makes you feel better, attack away.
I thought your statement:
"...and there will be no economy to come back to...", was overwrought*, and likely reflected
"...destroyed mental health...", so I was being empathetic.

FDA doesn't care about its citizens.

Economic Shutdown Is Estimated to Save 600,000 American Lives
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... ican-lives
Economists led by Northwestern University’s Martin Eichenbaum wrote that keeping social-distancing measures in place before the number of new virus cases declines -- in other words, before a peak in the infection rate -- could limit infections and prevent as many as 600,000 additional U.S. deaths.
[...]
“There is an inevitable trade-off between the severity of the recession and the health consequences of the epidemic,” the economists wrote in a working paper distributed this week by the National Bureau of Economic Research.
Under a worst-case scenario, with stores remaining open and no social isolation policies, as many as 215 million Americans could become infected and 2.2 million could die from the spread of the virus, the economists’ data shows.
It's actually more than that. It's like 1.6 million lives, IF we do what the Imperial College report suggests. But again, who, exactly, is saying "back to work now!"

Two former college basketball players die, reportedly of coronavirus
Two former college basketball players with New York City roots have died of complications of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
David Edwards, who set Texas A&M’s single-season record for assists as a guard in the early 1990s, has died of complications from covid-19. A university official confirmed the news for the Dallas Morning News after Charles Henderson, a former Aggies teammate, wrote about it on Facebook.
Lee Green, a guard who played for St. John’s in the early 1990s, died of the disease, according to the school’s assistant athletic director for sports medicine, and a former teammate...

Trump officials advise people leaving New York to self-quarantine for 14 days
https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/4 ... ine-for-14
The Trump administration is advising that individuals leaving New York should self-quarantine for 14 days to avoid potentially spreading the coronavirus.
Dr. Deborah Birx, a member of the White House’s coronavirus task force, made the recommendation during a press conference as New York's number of cases rises at a rapid pace. Vice President Pence echoed the recommendation later in the press conference.
“Everybody who was in New York should be self-quarantining for the next 14 days to ensure that the virus doesn't spread to others, no matter where they have gone, whether it's Florida, North Carolina, or out to…Long Island,” Birx said during a briefing with reporters.

New York is going to look very ugly -- for about 20 minutes, until New Orleans looks worse.
Shit's about to hit the fan.

I went outside earlier today. Was 55 and sunny, on a Tuesday. There were hundreds of people out in the park. I think 90% of folks have taken it serious. I think there's 10% who aren't. The numbers aren't going to flatten for a while here.

Young folks aren't taking it serious. Average age in the park was probably 23-25. Median age might have been less than that. I live near Columbia, so I might have skewed numbers. Can only report what I see in my neighborhood.
