Yeah, I'm sure they will. When KC hosted the All-Star game several years ago, they spent quite a bit of money cleaning up the interstates, landscaping, etc. Just wish they would consistently keep areas clean. But people need to quit being such lazy slobs and quit tossing trash and cig butts out their windows or disposing of trash/tires in vacant lots.

KCMO is a shithole. Nice parts, for sure, but overall, blech. Happy for area in seemingly getting WC, but it's a headscratcher as to why IMO. Sure, arrowhead is awesome, and more soccer moms per capita here than most places, but the city infrastructure is hot garbage, at best. And yes, to your point, very little civic pride in KC (doesn't mean the sports fans aren't passionate).

If nothing else, I think they owe it to the memory of Lamar Hunt. KC got passed over for the 1994 World Cup. Now I'm sure KC made a great bid and promised to do a lot of work between now and summer 2026 to make it as great of a host site as possible, but the Hunt family has done so much for soccer in this country that I'm sure they kind of owe it to them a little to put it there. From a purely soccer standpoint, Sporting KC's Pinnacle Training Facility on the KS side is going to be attractive for a team playing their group stage games in KC(if it is a group stage site and not a knockout round site) to make their home base.

Denver did a number on GQuinn. It's too bad that monstrosity of an airport 100 miles from their city center couldn't carry Denver across the finish line for the World Cup. KC as a soccer base puts Denver to shame--it's not even close. Nothing about that is headscratching.

Little civic pride in KC is such a bad take not just because the reality is that it's the exact opposite but also because the inflated civic pride contributes to many of KC's problems.

The cities aren't awarded a bid based on a soccer base, as a rule. KC may be the exception to that.

s. Granted, travel times in Denver are way way more varied. The number of flights served to/from the airport, and daily departure numbers aren't even in the same universe. That might change a little with a new facility. But that's undetermined.

Denver has a lot more to see/do than KC. A lot more hotels. The stadium is downtown. Public transit exists as more than as a token (still not great). The weather is almost always nicer, especially in the summer. See: Humidity. See also: rainfall totals.

I've lived in both places. Lawrence for the last year. Drive in parts of KC most don't too often every day, and on just about every highway quite often. Ick.

I'd like to know the actual civic pride. I know KC is "proud" of KC and such, but I'm positive more people in Colorado wear Co gear than people in KC wear the KC heart shirts (I love those, btw). As far as cities go, the people of Colorado keep their city immensely more clean than the people of KC. That's just from my own empirical evidence.

And finally, I'm not trying to dig at KC. I'm actually perplexed based on what I've seen living here. The stadium will sell out, I'm sure. But they all are going to. Lots more reasons for Denver to get a nod than KC, if it's down to one. That's just my opinion, though. Honestly, would like both to get bid, but Denver is unlikely from what I've read.

Not that you'll want to, but several times in this thread I've listed all the reasons why I thought KC didn't have a chance in hell of getting a WC bid. Yes, mostly related to transportation and hotel capacity. I thought there was no shot until last week.

But, here's the difference, Denver's bid essentially came down to: "we have a big airport and a shuttle from DEN to Union Station that takes 45 minutes and costs $11 each way." That's a hollow bid, especially compared to the one KC put forth which was almost all about the soccer, the sports culture, and the people. Not to mention that Denver's travel infrastructure is only convenient when you compare it to KC's, but worldwide, it's really sub-par. And sure, Denver has mountains to its west, but I don't think that's what FIFA was looking for.

I have no idea on which city's residents wear more local gear, I would say my "empirical evidence" supports that both cities do so at an annoyingly high rate compared to the coast cities. The civic pride hurts KC because it goes after things bigger than it is and likes to put forth shiny things that make it look good on billboards and TV but actually only serves a small portion of the population--this, among other problems.

I was just in Denver on Monday for like the 15th time. Downtown, Central Park, Aurora, and Cherry Creek, to be exact. I don't find any of those to be cleaner or dirtier than my bubble of KCMO west of Troost and north of 103rd street (and Central Park was quite scary considering its location). They're cities in the middle of the country. Cleaner than the coasts. Dirtier than many parts of the world. That said, there are politics with the highway cleanup because of the two states, multiple cities, and counties. i.e. the State of Missouri refuses to clean the roads in their jurisdiction.

To be clear, though, as a city I like Denver way more than KC. None of the poorly built giant airport, that slow ass Union Station shuttle, the CO t-shirts, nor the lack or presence of Styrofoam cups on the highway are anywhere near the top 10 reasons, though.

Copy that, man. And I’ll be happy when it’s announced there will be games down the road 50 miles!

denver was great 10 years ago. the city got caught with its pants down by not planning accordingly for growth. it’s such a clusterfuck now. obviously traffic control is just one aspect, but for visitors (vs townies) it’s a rather important one

Edmonton dropped. Watch party scheduled means it is likely going to happen. Now, will KC host a US game, absolutely not. But we'll get a couple of games like Ghana vs South Korea and Chile vs Italy. Some lower-ish tier games that will still be fun to watch. I'm going to do my best to get to a game.

But they'll save the big matchups and the US games for the big markets like NY, LA, Houston and other places like that.

But good for KC. An expected $500M plus economic impact.
