If it occurs again that a president of one party is impeached by a House of the other party, which rushes through an impeachment proceeding, refusing to wait until privilege issues can be adjudicated or negotiated, largely because of electoral concerns, and then sends it to the Senate of the president's party for trial, then yes, perhaps this will be seen as a precedent.

...so, you really think that, if/when Trump gets away with this and just does a more intense version of this same thing [1] in a few months, the exact fact pattern of how the inquiry/articles arose will matter? I do not. I think it will be established Constitutional precedent that abuse of power is not impeachable conduct [2], full stop.

[1] Because, of course, this is what he does. He was barely clear of the heat from the Russia investigation when he started in on this nonsense. And it would be foolish to believe that Zelensky is the only guy this wannabe strongman has tried to strongarm.

I don't think that comparing this to Clinton in that sense is a valid approach. What he did set a precedent that perjury is not necessarily punishable - it means that even if Trump, Mulvaney, Rudy, etc. are called as witnesses, they can just lie.

That's actually the danger though - that allowing Trump to get away with this sets a horrible precedent.
