I'm wondering how far back this goes, if it's just always been a part of the church, when did it start? I have a hard time believing it was the 50's or whenever.
Read Rosseau's 'Pachomius' and Eco's 'The Name of The Rose' and you'll see that there were a lot more reasons than religion to align oneself with the Church--cloistered or acting as a priest/holy man--and protection for the flock was usually turning a blind eye to the misdeeds by those in charge. So I'd say this circle of protection has been in pace since the 4th C.

Re: More evidence that religious threads make you dum
was just talking to a colleague that is trying to do biotic fieldwork in the Andaman and Nicobar islands...not a safe place for ANY outsiders
native islanders will literally attack you on the beach at some locales
sucks that someone died, but surely they knew the risks

"The boat stopped 500-700 meters (1,640 - 2,300 ft) away from the island and (the American missionary) used a canoe to reach the shore of the island. He came back later that day with arrow injuries. On the 16th, the (tribespeople) broke his canoe.
"So he came back to the boat swimming. He did not come back on the 17th; the fishermen later saw the tribespeople dragging his body around."
wait, so did he go back again after he got shot up with arrows?
take a fucking clue dude.

so if you're trying an unsolicited approach of a native community on isolated land, is there an appropriate way to break the ice?
"I'm here to set up a fort, and start buying the place with beads"
what about like language barriers and stuff?

Yea, I was confused by that. Maybe the writing was unclear?
Because from what I read - he got shot at and hit with arrows. They broke his canoe. So then he started to swim ashore, arrow injuries and all.

"Chau’s own death was made especially poignant by notes he scrawled in a journal after his first attempt to come ashore, on November 15. That initial approach was rebuffed when an arrow pierced a waterproof copy of the Bible Chau held aloft in his quest to evangelize the tribe. As he saw two other tribesmen readying arrows in their bows, Chau beat a hasty retreat in his kayak. He paddled back to the fishermen whom he’d paid about $350 to bring him there and await his return."

The missionary's position is clear
Break them down
Converting the savage Panare
Break them down
And purge them of all of their sins
Break them down
Whilst making funds trading jaguar skins
Break them down
The new tribe's mission and the Lord
Break them down
Are gonna fit them with a vinyl spinal cord
Break them down
In the jungle in Venezuela
Break them down
Checked shirts, radios, barbed wire
Break them down
Ooh, when they teach those savages to believe
We'll all be one step closer to world harmony
Break them down
Break them down
They rewrote the Lord's prayer
Break them down
And made the death of Christ the work of the Panare
Break them down
Nearby Darwin was hanging by his throat
Break them down
The fundamentalists were starting to gloat
Break them down
Losing their loin cloths as they gain ethnicide
All dressed in Western clothes and God will be their guide
Break them down
Break them down
Break them down
Break them down
Break them down

On a 9 hour flight to Europe, we sat in front of a missionary who read the Bible aloud to his two assistants--and gave his misguided interpretation for 5 of the 9 hours, even though we asked him twice to please shut up (we were the only 6 people on the plane who were awake by that time).
Would have understood locals in whatever country he was traveling to who wouldn't much appreciate his proselytizing.

Yikes. This is why God invented noise cancelling headphones.

Hey, I grew up listening to sermons on the Bible from fairly erudite mainstream Protestants and hearing the rather different interpretations from my evangelical friends’ ministers when I attended church with them. But this guy on the plane, weird for either group.

Had a tennis partner who was a flight attendant for 30 years. She said that had we notified them, the flight attendants would have told him to shut up.
