When it's one player it's one thing. Or if it's a bunch of freshmen. But this was everyone. Roy Williams' teams played a faster pace and never turned it over 28 times. Bill Self has had younger teams and he had never had a team turn it over 28 times before tonight.
With Gutter being gone this week I'll say it - has the NCAA stuff gotten in the minds of the coaching staff to the point they can't do their jobs well?
...or it's just a statistical outlier consistent with the distribution of things like turnovers

This team needs an adjustment offensively. Dok is going to get doubled against every team we play. The offense needs to run through the backcourt. Not the bigs. Dok is a complimentary piece. Not a focal point. All the guards need to attack off the dribble and look for Dok to cleanup misses (or lobs). Posting Dok on the block and expecting him to score consistently isn’t a recipe for consistent success in my eyes. ESPECIALLY knowing Dok will receive double teams all year long. Run 4 guards. Play Garrett at the 4 when Moss is back... Self said he has never been more motivated. He just lost to a coach getting away with cheating. How could Bill need any more incentive after tonight’s debacle?

Our 3-pt percentage was really good!
The Kansas team that "can't shoot" shot a higher fg% and a higher 3pt fg% than any of the other four teams playing in the Champions Classic tonight. We just had 50 fga to Duke's 64 thanks to turnovers.

Good grief, this is getting embarrassing.

We made 4 shots outside of the paint.

Which means when we run our offense and pass to the right team that we are a very efficient offense shooting high percentage shots. I agree that a team that shoots less threes isnt as much fun to watch but they are a lot more consistent.
At the end of every year you can stack up all your games with your beat at the top and your worst at the bottom. I am not a betting man but I'd bet this one will be at the bottom for this year. Having your worst game be the first game vs. #4 in MSG isnt a sign of problems. It's normal. A bummer but normal.
We all hate Duke and it would have been extra fun to beat them but we didnt. Fortunately the team is allowed to continue to practice, allowed to watch film and allowed to make adjustments to their plan, their prep and their execution.
If it was March, we'd have a problem.
It's not.

Kind of crazy we were even in the game.
I think it's fair to be a little upset with the staff, but it's going to feel like a distant memory the same way Grimes beating up Sparty felt even less than a month later.

The teams coached by coaches with more complicated offensive systems (Self, Izzo) lost last night and looked messy on offense. The teams coached by coaches with less complicated AAU style offensive systems (K, Cal) won last night and looked more poised. That doesn't surprise me.
Kansas has more returning "experience" but that experience isnt in running what we will he running this year. We ran about 8 different offenses last year (with Dok and Vick but not Agbaji, without Dok and Agbaji but with Vick, without Fok and Vick but with Agbaji, etc...) so I am not surprised that we didnt look poised and in tune.
We had one stretch in the 2nd half where we looked like everyone was on the same page and we crushed them. I will assume that we will have longer stretches of time where everyone remembers what to do as the season wears on and we get reps with this rotation. If everyone important stays healthy, we will be a beast by January.

I don't know that Self's offensive system is that complicated. A lot of different systems doesn't necessarily mean complicated especially when he runs only about 1 or 2 to start the season.
And, if it is complicated, what the fuck is he doing because we haven't been able to score with this core of players.
Last night was mostly about playing poorly, not enough focus, and a little bit about figuring out rotations. Udoka seems to be a slow starter, as well, and perhaps regressed in his ability to make something happen against the double team during his time off.

Yeah, when we executed, we dominated. 14-0 run, iirc.
But that was the only time all game we seemed to be running plays. The rest of the game we just carelessly threw the ball around waiting for somebody to do something. That’s all stuff we’ll get cleaned up.

I hate to say it, but Dok is the problem with this offense.

I have a hard time distinguishing between what is Doke's fault, and what is our guards' fault in terms of getting him the ball in a position to score.

Before we go all chicken little, let's remember that Self has figured out how to use Udoka so effectively that he set NCAA records for efficiency.
But, sure, with guys like Agbaji and Dotson, we do not have to run the offense through Udoka, and I don't think we will. Udoka's best season here, we didn't run the offense through him. That's on the staff to figure out and Dotson playing better sure helps a ton.

I've talked to you about this before, Udoka was at his absolute best when he had Devonte'.

Udoka is going to be fine.
Dotson is going to be fine.
Garrett is going to be fine.
We're going to be a top 10 team and likely a top 5 team.
We played like dogshit in the first game but you could see how bothersome we could be on defense with our size and length -- and how methodical we could be on offense forcing the other teams into foul trouble.
