Butter only. I'm not a sour cream fan. Butter and light cheese for me.

Big fan of steak fries with steak. Soak up all the plate drippings.

Steak fries are terrific with steak. I like the big, wedgy ones at The Majestic.

Steak fries are the potato offering that restaurants do poorly most often. I tend to avoid them unless I know they do them well, which is not that often.


That said, I'm planning on making duck fat steak fries using the "Food Wishes" method tonight. I got a pink himalayan salt block for a christmas gift and I'm going to try cooking some steaks (tenderloin filets) on it tonight.

There’s this high end steakhouse that sells ridiculously overpriced cuts of waygu. (Like $16+ an ounce for ribeye).

All their steaks are served topped with “shoestring” fries - just extra skinny curly fries.

So, after you spend hundreds of dollars a plate at dinner, you can walk out wondering whether the sides are better at Arby’s.

What about scalloped potatoes? Or are they considered "cottage fries"? I've never heard anybody say cottage fries.

I didn't know what cottage fries were either.

I am a fan of scalloped potatoes though once or twice a year though..

Scalloped potatoes are awesome. Had them on Christmas eve with a rib roast.

They're also great with leg of lamb or ham...or really anytime you can't or don't want to make a gravy.

I googled images of cottage fries, still not sure what they are..lol. Looks just like pan cooked potatoes sliced with the skin on?

I've seen them sliced and pan fried sometimes with onions. I've also seen them as frozen sliced potatoes about 1/4" thick. I don't care for the latter.

Anyone ever had fondant potatoes?

BTW, sweet potatoes shouldn't be called potatoes. There is a reason the word yam was created.

I've seen a couple recipes for them recently. I hadn't either.

They seem like a much fatter version of the kind you don't like.

Interesting that a couple people on here did not know what cottage fries are. I thought they were pretty common in this country.
Meanwhile, I used to think pretty much everyone would know what Chicken Vesuvio is.
I have since learned most people in this country don't have a clue - other than it's a chicken dish that is possibly Italian.

As far as Steak Fries v. Cottage Fries v. Baked Potato, I would opt for Steak Fries 75% of the time.
Thing to consider is how they are prepared. Big difference between having them fried in oil or their being baked in an oven.

I think cottage fries are what we called fried potatoes growing up.

Yeah not a fan of sweet potatoes/yams, but I do like sweet potato chips or fries.
