But, even with Kane, why would he take a job that can completely dim his rising star?
Depends how confident you are.

I also thought about Kill/Claeys combo just as a temporary stabilizer. Something that is not unneeded.

Good list of candidates here:

My top 10 choices.

1. Bob Bell - the dead Bozo the Clown
2. Kyle Rittenhouse pre Kenosha
3. Willie Pless
4. Gary Busey
5. My Mother
6. M.C. Hammer
7. Andrew Yang
8. Dennis Rodman
9. Prince Harry
10. Big Bird

Being serious, no matter who is hired, my biggest hope is that he's NOT another "name" guy who was fired from his last job.
It will be interesting to see if Long is still around after an "outside firm" assists in the process.
Then is the ultimate decision going to be his or Girod's?

I think it should be a guy like Gill — in terms of, success as a head coach for a smaller program with something to prove. Gill didn’t work out. Maybe our next guy will.

Who is ready for another winless season?

If you can get past the Gill stink, Leipold is an objectively great candidate.

This is a bad time for a coaching change. Free transfers still in effect. KU could lose a tenth of their roster depending on the hire and all that. But that being said here’s a breakdown of coaches you’ll see everywhere.

Lance Leipold should aim higher, but he could be amazing. Been a winner at both levels. His offenses score a ton of points.

Jeff Monken from Army should be a top call. But he’s a true option guy. But guys would play hard and he is from Midwest which could help.

Troy Calhoun from Air Force is intriguing. He’s been an OC at NFL level, but runs option at Air Force. But he’s always been close to leaving for bigger programs, would he leave now.

Willie Fritz would take the job, I think. But he is 60 and winding down. But he can coach.

Kevin Kane would connect with boosters extremely well being an alum. And moving up constantly in the coaching ranks.

Interim candidates should stop at Emmitt Jones or Josh Eargle. Let DeBord and Eliot do their coordinator roles.

My order of preference
Leipold
Fritz
Kane
Calhoun
Monken
Emmitt Jones
Josh Eargle

But also, if Emmitt Jones isn’t the guy, you do everything you can to keep him. He didn’t come here because Miles. Tech didn’t retain him and he wanted to stay in Big 12 at a school where recruiting Texas is important.

The more I go through things, the more I come back to Leipold. I get all the reasons one would shy away from him, but honestly Gill was ten years ago. You don’t turn way the best candidate because his path reminds you of Gill’s.

I can’t get behind any option guy. Not when we’re realistically a long way off from getting the best line prospects in the state, let alone the region.

If “outside the box” is your thinking, I could get behind Candle from Toledo.

I read last night that Long has already contacted Jimmy Sexton (agent to/for a lot of "premier" coaches).
Not sure if I believe it but that's probably not a bad place to start.

KU will be on its 7th coach this century.

Candle was a hot commodity a couple years back, has struggled a bit since. But he’s 41 and hasn’t finished below .500 yet in a season.

Would be a youthful coach with some fire and success to boot.

First call should be Leipold.

And we’re on our ninth basketball coach in program history?

I'm pretty sure Mason was the only KU football coach to coach 100 games at KU.

Jay Norvell from Nevada might be a name too. Former OU top assistant. 25-22 in 4 seasons. First season was rough but good since.

Also, we’ve seen a coach come to Lawrence two straight years and win.

Make Jamey Chadwell at Coastal Carolina a call you have to make too.
