KU drops 2 spots, to 8, for playing MIZZOU in AP.
More evidence why we shouldn't play MIZZOU.
( though chalk it up, just barely, as a Quad 1 win )

Abolish the polls

It's getting really close to that between legalized sports gambling, the college football playoff rankings, and the rise of analytics.

At what point point do ESPN and FOX start using KenPom instead of AP on TV?

Kenpom we jumped into the top 10.
7th overall.
14th adjO, 11th adjD.

UConn number one.
I watched them easily take care of ( 37 ) Oklahoma State a week or so ago.

Considering we were 3.5 pt. favorites and won by 28 we should have moved up a spot. We were #6 going in and were 24.5 pts. better than they thought we were. Vegas is usually smarter than the AP voters but in this case both were dumb.

Bama moved ahead of us thanks to their win over #1 and Tennessee moved ahead of us thanks to beating #13 and kicking our asses.

The polls are fine.

It's not just about this week. I've just never liked them. 90% of the poll voters are nerds who don't know anything. They just happen to like sports a bit and they like to write. They've rarely played it, so how can they analyze and determine who is the best.

At least Jesse Newell was open and said "Hey, I'm using this process to come up with my vote" and not these arrogant and pompous a-holes that think they're on a high horse.

And before anyone says anything about the Coaches Poll, the coaches don't vote for that. It's the SIDs of the athletic department. The last thing coaches want to do is analyze other teams and try to put them 1-25.

Speaking of nerds, i think the ultimate 'nerd', Ken Pomeroy, has a better system than the polls, which is made up of lesser 'nerds' who vote more subjectively.

See, and I'm fine with that. They base it on SOMETHING.

Lots of the voters don't use anything but their "eye test" which is absurd.

Having the polls generates fan interest when opposing ranked teams come to town. Other than that, they really don't have much bearing on the sport during the course of a season. The week to week ebb and flow of them is pretty inconsequential in the scheme of things other than to generate conversation about the sport, which as a college hoops fan, is an overall good thing.

But when the BCS was based on an algorithm everyone lost their shit precisely because it didn't include the "eye test".

The real issue with that was how much the BCS Standings mattered because of the awful cfb postseason system(s).

The big controversy with the computer influence and when everyone lost their minds was also like 20 years ago (wasn't it the 2000 colorado or nebraska team that caused the biggest stir?). Times have changed and we use a combo of algorithm and humans for NCAAT seedings. Few complaints b/c the seedings mean so much less than something like the BCS Standings or CFP Rankings.

And that's kind of my issue with the AP poll now--it's not that it shouldn't exist, it's that so many put so much stock into it.

It's like self-driving vehicles. Even if they result in 50% fewer crashes people won't trust them. As soon as an algorithm fucks up people don't trust it and think they can do better.

I dont trust self driving cars...ever. nope, no thanks. I'm not letting jesus or Elon or anyone else take the wheel....I got this.

A little "eh," on that analogy, although I know what you're trying to say.

With sports and analytics, I'm a big fan, but they just don't tell you everything. If they did, we probably wouldn't watch. The human factor is just so real. And most people's favorite players are because of that.

It's basically a statistical fact that people think they are better drivers than they actually are.

So, the question you might ask yourself instead: on average, do you trust another driver or a self driving car more?

To tie it into sports and KenPom: this is why Vegas always ends up winning.

The difference being that when Vegas is wrong someone loses money - when a self-driving car is wrong someone gets injured or dies.
