Former President Donald Trump attempted to explain what he meant when he told a crowd of Christians last Friday that, as far as voting goes, they wouldn’t “have to do it anymore” if he wins in November.

Trump spoke to Fox News host Laura Ingraham on Monday amid criticism about his remarks, which Democrats say is further evidence that he would attempt to stay in office beyond a second term. Opponents have pointed to other remarks in which he pledged to only be a dictator on “day one” of a new term and vowed to retaliate against his critics if he returns to the White House.

Ingraham afforded Trump multiple attempts to reject Democrats’ claims that he was telling supporters they wouldn’t need to vote again in the future, but Trump reiterated that Christians wouldn’t have to vote for him multiple times.

“This was a crowd that liked me a lot ... and they’re treated very badly by this administration, OK?” Trump said of his speech Friday at the faith-focused event in Florida.

“That statement is very simple,” he added. “I said, vote for me; you’re not going to have to do it ever again. It’s true.”

“This time vote, I’ll straighten out the country, you won’t have to vote anymore, I won’t need your vote.”

“You meant you won’t have to vote for you because you’ll have four years in office,” Ingraham pressed.

“I’m saying go out, you must vote,” Trump replied. “I said to the Christians in the room … you have to vote on Nov. 5. After that, you don’t have to worry about voting anymore — I don’t care — because we’re going to fix up, the country will be fixed and we won’t even need your vote anymore because frankly we will have such love.”

The former president added that Christians and gun owners were the key groups he was trying to appeal to, claiming they “don’t vote.” He also repeated his claim that Jewish Americans who vote for a Democrat “should have your head examined.”

Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic nominee, has hit Trump in recent days after he has continued to lay groundwork to dodge the next presidential debate, in which Trump would likely face her. President Joe Biden dropped out of his reelection campaign a week ago amid fallout over his disastrous performance in the June 27 debate with Trump. Ingraham asked why Trump didn’t seem willing to appear.

“I want to do a debate, but I also can say this: Everybody knows who I am,” he told the host. “And now people know who she is. She’s a radical left lunatic.”

“Then why not debate her?” Ingraham replied.

“Well, wait, because they already know everything,” Trump replied.

In 2016, Trump was able to fire up his white men without college degrees by focusing his campaign rhetoric on immigration and white grievance, or the idea that white people are the victims of discrimination, ideas that remain key among Republican voters, according to NPR.

But by 2020, it seemed that argument had already started to lose ground among white voters across the educational spectrum, who began to defect to Joe Biden’s camp. While Trump still came out on top in securing white male voters, the difference between their turnout in 2016 and 2020 was the nail in the coffin of his reelection bid.

Things only got worse from there. According to NPR, between 2020 and 2024, Biden saw a 24-point bump among white men with college degrees, a group that has historically backed Republicans.

Trump has begun to experience a slip in swing states, as well. Polling from late 2023 and early 2024 in Wisconsin, a key battleground state, showed that Trump’s net favorability rating among white men had dropped 22 points, from plus eight points to minus 14 points. Trump saw major slips with self-identified Republicans, rural men, and white men who did not attend college, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. These groups have a sizable overlap and make up a crucial part of Trump’s base.

In an effort to reclaim these voters, Trump tapped Vance to be his running mate, as someone who could theoretically appeal to both college-educated and non–college educated white men, touting his widely popularized white working-class roots alongside his degree from Yale Law School.

“You need a white guy to get the white guys we lost. The Hillbilly Elegy guy is the one to do it,” MAGA political operative Vish Burra told The Bulwark. “Trump needs Vance because he’s good on camera and he sounds right. He’s not one of these people you can dismiss as a MAGAloid or a barbarian.”

So far, it’s not totally clear that Vance is up for the task of white guy retrieval.

While there was plenty of initial excitement over Vance’s selection, a YouGov poll taken the week his nomination was announced found that Vance was viewed “very” favorably by only 18 percent of male respondents and “very” unfavorably by 28 percent. The results were identical among white respondents.

The same poll found that male respondents and white respondents were about evenly split in supporting versus disapproving of Trump picking Vance.

CNN analyst Harry Enten reported last week that Vance averaged a net favorability of negative six points across all polls, a number that was far lower than any other vice presidential nominee in history, including former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.

The hateful comment about Kamala Harris’ husband came from Sid Rosenberg during a segment where he interviewed Trump on his New York-based show Sid & Friends In The Morning.

“Doug Emhoff, Mr. President, is Jewish,” Rosenberg said. “He’s Jewish like Bernie Sanders is Jewish. Are you kidding me? He’s a crappy Jew. He’s a horrible Jew.”

As Rosenberg spoke, Trump could be heard agreeing by saying “yes” twice, once after Emhoff was compared to Sen. Sanders (D-VT) and again after the second gentleman was referred to as a “crappy Jew.”

Trump had his own choice words for Jewish people during the segment, in which he briefly spoke as if Joe Biden remained the nominee at the top of Democrats’ presidential ticket.

“Any Jewish person that votes for Biden or a Democrat, but votes for Biden,” he said before explaining he meant to say Harris. “... should have their head examined.”

The former president later added: “If you are Jewish, regardless of Israel, if you’re Jewish, if you vote for a Democrat, you’re a fool, an absolute fool.”

Trump also claimed that Harris, whose husband of nearly 10 years is Jewish, “doesn’t like” Jewish people.

“You know it, I know it,” Trump said of his unsubstantiated claim about Harris. “Everybody knows it, and nobody wants to say it.”

I'll preface my response by saying I'm extremely confident I am a worse Jew than he is, and in many ways he's a very good Jew, but in some way's he's a "crappy Jew".
I'll add, these aren't reasons why I feel he's a crappy Jew. Frankly, the things I will mention don't really matter to me at all, but they do matter to other Jews - who would say he's a "crappy Jew" because of them.

A. He's a reform Jew.
B. Married a non-Jew who I don't believe converted.
C. Married a another non-Jew who definitely did not convert.
D. Didn't raise his kids Jewish, his Daughter doesn't "identify" as being Jewish, says religion was not a part of her life growing up.
