But, I live in Central IL. It's flat. So that never helped the appeal.

I come from a golfing family. When we went on vacations as a kid it revolved around golfing.

2. I "hike" to work and then back home every day of the work week. Actual hard core hike - about 6 years ago. Near Evergreen Colorado. Bitch got us lost. Hot, humid, out of water, fucked up ankle. Vowed to never go hiking again unless I am on a trail and the person/people I am with know/s the trail well.

I did portions of both of these in the 90s. I have nothing to argue about your list!
I did research at Isle Royale in 1992. I have probably been on every trail on the eastern half of the park. I have only made it back once since. Fantastic place. Definitely needs to be kept a secret.

When I was a poor kid, my cleats were often my most expensive pair of shoes. Presently, it is surely some pair of hiking or trail shoe.

I accidentally almost peed on a moose in Isle Royale.
That would have been around 1995-96.

Speaking of the Royale with Cheese, not that I eat McDonalds past breakfast ever, but the ‘84 Olympics were the best, as everything was free since the USSR boycotted.

Also. It’s pretty comical to think of McDonald’s as an Olympic sponsor.

Water. Rain water, lake water, unsaturated soil water. Usually, if it wasn't raining, I got to hike and explore. Fantastic summer job. I would write out my grocery order and it would come by boat a week later. There was one telephone, and it was on a different island. I saw many moose but never peed on one. I never saw a wolf nor heard one. I saw more dead moose and ticks than I needed to. I kinda got sick of listening to loons. I think I would enjoy them now.

I also did not see a wolf.
Unfortunately, the wolves basically died out about 10 years ago...but they've since relocated some to the island and now there are 30 or so wolves there.

Zion, Havasu Falls, and Denali would be my top 3 US hike locales

though, i feel like going with Denali is the easy choice for “Alaska”. there are phenomenal trails all along SE Alaska in the temperate rainforests

No description, no infomation. Just a "next time you are exploring the area, go to this site. (Be sure to check in with the reservation office first)

Needless to say, if anyone has been there, I was BLOWN AWAY.

fortunate that it’s 1) so isolated, and 2) highly access restricted

when i went back in the early 2000s, there were 7 of us and i think we had to reserve more than a year ahead of time or something ridiculous like that
