I think I would die attempting a marathon without proper training (which of course is what it is all about), along with motivation and goals. I jog occasionally, mostly on a treadmill now. I’ve done the Trolley Run in KC probably 20 times and each year it gets harder. I think I just hate running, but do it for health benefits, mostly just keeping my weight in check and anxiety relief.

My wife is doing a half-marathon in October and has been prepping for it all summer. She does it mostly because she thinks running keeps her more fit than other activities she has tried and can do easily. She doesn't seem to care whether anyone knows she is running it or not so it doesn't seem to be ego-fueled. It's just about setting a goal so that it keeps her participating and then sticking to it.
I personally hate running and will only run if someone is chasing me with a gun. If they only have a knife, I'll stand my ground and take my chances. Every part of my body hates me when I run more than about a half mile. Did a 10k a few years back for a fundraiser (wife --> "do it with me, it will be fun") and hated every second of it.

Listen to your body. Key to aging out.

Yep.
To both of you. Your first paragraph sums it up perfectly. You aren’t doing it for anyone else. That said, it’s super cool to be running one and get cheered on as I described above.
Halves, honestly, although definitely an awesome achievement, once you get there from a cardio standpoint. Easy peasy! (Not taking away from the work to get there, trust me!).
When I trained, I loved when I got to the point where 5 miles was more or less a warm up, or where I’d run that distance with intervals or as a fartlek run to build strength/endurance. Good shit. Now I’m just a fatty. Sigh.

Every time I run, I listen to my body and it is saying "were you not listening the last time I told you that I hate this? Here, now I am going to throw in some new stuff and make all your skin on your legs itch for the first mile. LISTEN BETTER!"
