Regarding him being the best ever.
Hindsight 20/20.
We have said this about other recruits before.
I usually don't. I always down play how much I think most recruits will be able to contribute, compared to others expectation.
But notice I said he's the best guard PROSPECT self has ever brought in. Huge difference than best player ever.
He's an incoming freshman. Of course he's going to have a lot to improve on. He's going to make mistakes, probably going to frustrate us at times. But he has rare tools. Self hasn't had a guard before that's quite this naturally gifted

This guy is the best guard prospect self has ever had. This is a really big deal. Biggest commitment since Andrew wiggins
Huge.
Self era recruits/rankings since 2011:
Andrew Wiggins #1 (2013)
Josh Jackson #1 (2016)
Darryn Peterson #3 (2025)
Cliff Alexander #5 (2014)
Kelly Oubre #7 (2014)
Cheick Diallo #7 (2015)
Quentin Grimes #10 (2018)
Selby?

just outta curiosity, is there any reason you only went back to 2011?
cuz coincidentally, we landed the number one recruit in the class of 2010.
I dunno if that makes him the "best guard prospect" randy mentions, but if nothing else cuz Peterson is bigger and longer, kinda makes him feel better already.
Now, let's just hope Peterson doesn't go snacking ribs at Bruce Pearl's BBQ parties...
That's as far back as 247 was letting me go. Maybe because I chose composit rankings. Not sure.

Is that true? Weren’t Xavier or Selby like #1 in their class?
Ha, clearly I’m late to the party.

I think X was 2 and Selby 1.
So yes, I guess, maybe the biggest commitment since Wiggins in terms of freshman recruits who want to be here only one year but honestly bigger commitments since then were the likes of Frank Mason, Devonte Graham, David McCormack and Ochai Agbaji.

And Christian Braun + Dajuan Harris.

I think X was in the 7-8 range.
1 and 2 were John Wall and Boogie.
(That's Demarcus Cousins, for anyone who isn't familiar with baller nicknames)
And once Cal left Memphis and X was back on the market at the eleventh hour we basically swapped him for like 13ish ranked Born Ready
(That's Lance Stephenson, for those whose baller nicknames are not, um, prepared from birth)
I remember X's debut he had like 26 points and looked amazing and thinking we finally won the one-and-done lottery. Then he just kinda spent the rest of the season on cruise control.

Did you expect him to average 25 per game?
He averaged 13.4 points per game. Thats pretty close to Brandon Rush's junior season (actually all of his seasons)..
Xavier had a career high of 31 and scored 17 points or more in 8 games.
That's a nice "cruise control". X was a perfect one and done. A top 10 freshman season during the Self era.

all I know is, during and in the wake of that season, there were certain sentiments on the message boards that Xavier didn't stay aggressive enough over the course of the season, and mighta taken his foot off the gas to avoid injury for the sake of his draft stock, and stuff like that.

You could argue he was the best one and done we have had. He joined an absolutely loaded team, and fit in perfectly, while being super productive and giving us athletic talent and a scoring punch

5 of his 10 highest scoring games came in February and March. So, stats don't support this picture you're painting. He also played every game. So not sure how playing less hard protects draft stock? Seems like another dumb hot take.
Is this another one of those eye test things? Body language?

holy shit.
if we can get Dajuan to play the guard spot even half as aggressively as illy trying to argue, then we're def winning it all this season.

I'm providing facts.
You're just jibber jabbering like my 7 year old does. Nonsense.

and yet, you still refuse to simply ignore me.
Instead, you very persistently continue to engage me!
but, I'll admit. I got curious about your take here on Xavier stats.
Coincidentally enough, 5 of his 10 LOWEST scoring games came in February and March as well.
What does it mean, illy?!

It means he was an inconsistent freshman.
Both show that he wasn't "on cruise control to protect his draft status". Which doesn't even fucking make sense in the first place.
I'm not going to ignore you. If you say dumb shit then I'm going to tell you that you're saying dumb shit.
If you stop saying dumb shit then I won't have to keep telling you that you're saying dumb shit.

Oh.
I took it to mean, stats (more objective and quantitative) are not necessarily the best indicator of sentiments (more subjective and qualitative).
As far as whether it does or does not “even fucking make sense in the first place,” well, who says sentiments have to make sense? They’re inherently prone to bias and emotions and such.
Heck, your use of language as strong as “even fucking make sense in the first place” and repeated use of terms like “dumb shit” suggests you may be prone to bias and emotions about this very discussion.
But, rather than keep on keeping on with that, let’s just assume we agree here.
Cuz fwiw I also agree that X’s freshman season was among the best in the Self era.

So many pointless posts.
Just because someone said something on a messageboard doesn't mean it's true. Or worth discussing a decade later. But you had to get your dig in. Like always.

know what? I'm meaning this constructively. Just food for thought here. I'm prone to this sort of mindset too. It's something I'm learning to try to avoid, but doing so can be difficult. Cuz, know what I've realized about this mindset? What motivates you to think this way?
Pride.
The mindset that you shouldn't back down from a message board spat...that's pride fucking with you.
Fuck pride!
It only hurts. It never helps.
Fight through that shit.
