If you read my response above, you will see that I acknowledge that BOTH actions need to be taken. Not sure how much more I can agree with your contention that those who break the law by hiring illegals should be culpable as well.zsn wrote: ↑Mon Nov 11, 2024 10:53 amThis is NOT a “part of what needs to be done” problem, or what I see as the best solution. When it takes, by definition, two people working together to commit the crime (employer AND employee are breaking the law) why does your solution only involve punishing the employee? Why don’t you (and your MAGAverse) start with the employer? How many dads in minivans have you arrested in the Home Depot parking lot?JKLivin wrote: ↑Mon Nov 11, 2024 8:01 amI understand that you see that as the primary/best solution. I agree that it is a part of what needs to be done; however, I think deportation is also necessary. I am hopeful that the Trump administration will take a multifaceted approach as well.zsn wrote: ↑Sun Nov 10, 2024 11:49 pm
In other words, he just keeps spewing whatever fecal matter that comes into what passes for his brain and the rubiverse just laps it up.
If you’re serious about solving it address it from the demand side. But guess what. They tried it and businesses pushed back. So enough with this nonsense.

Democrats: [Use a portion of their limited political capital to make it so that lettuce only rises to $4.50/head instead of $5/head.]
Trump: Democrats are responsible for $4.50/head lettuce.

Trump is inheriting a pretty strong economy. He will get to ride that for a couple of years.
In those 2 years, with full control of everything in our Government, nothing will be accomplished outside of petty hearings and victory laps.
Trump will be out rallying within 6 months. Between golf, rallies and military parades...he will be no more than the portrait that we will be forced to view in all places public.
In about 2 years, the infighting and jockeying for power will cause the GOP to start eating their own as they scramble to get in front of TVs.
Burning it down makes sense, except that it may well be Democracy that burned.

I’m afraid the economy is not as strong as Dems try to say it is.
I think either the less-than-strong economy, and/or the dem messaging that “actually the economy is great” maybe being perceived as exaggerated, combined with Trump being at least some alternative to either or both of those things, is much of how Trump got reelected.
My point, abd the theory I’ve been meaning to offer to this thread, is that if we can assume Americans largely vote with their wallets, then maybe they’ll continue to act with their wallets.
If Americans really are feeling the pinch of inflation (dem messaging be damned) as much as this election outcome may suggest, and if Trump not only does nothing to effectively mitigate that but also maybe makes economic conditions even worse (like isn’t this whole tariff thing rooted more in some ideology and less in actual economic understanding, Elon’s omen, etc.), that might ultimately be Trump’s Achilles heel that his opponents have been looking for.
So if Trump’s approval rating were to slip due to economic hardships, so much so even some critical mass of magaheads finally realizes he's been full of shit all along, and if and when Trump finally does something stoopid enough to get his ass impeached yet again (this much feels inevitable), maybe the “greatest economy ever” (turns out whoever is in charge just arbitrarily claims that no matter what) will actually be rocky enough that republicans will finally play ball with a trial.
Either that, or Trump hangs onto power so much so he rescinds the 22nd, and ironically gets his ass kicked in 2028 by Barack Obama.

Re: trump’s promises
What people failed to understand is that the economy underwent two huge shocks, a global pandemic and a war in Europe, and has mostly recovered, but may never completely recover. A third shock, mass deportations may end us. It will be impossible to recover affordable food prices. The late 1920s come to mind. Republicans had a surplus budget and refused to ameliorate the suffering that was the Great Depression. I see a lot of parallels today. If we added tariffs to the mix, and climate change dust bowl and fire activity, putting money under your mattress might be good. This isn't a Nostradamus level guess either. This is basically taking the best economy in the world and making a Tesla truck out of it. Trump should moderate and enjoy the inherited stability. But it seems unlikely. There are immoderates all around. This is a real danger.
Re: trump’s promises
The "economy" is both personal and relative; and dependent upon a lot of issues outside of our country. The current US economy is about as strong as it could be, considering all of the current headwinds. The US economy is also capable of going south in a hurry.
Seriously; fuck around and find out.
If you look at our economy relative to the rest of the world....where else would you want to be right now? And, I encourage you to try and move there.
Personally my economy is better now than it was when I was in my 30's, 40's and 50's. I made career choices and made sacrifices to get where I wanted to be. If you look back in your life and see that your personal choices and decisions didn't get you where you wanted to be, you own that. Choices have consequences.
If you thought a political party or a candidate was going to take financial care of you regardless of your actions or inactions, you have not been paying attention. There were never any "good old days" where shit was just given to anyone who wasn't born to it.
No one lied to you about how good our economy is. You just don't have enough of an understanding of how economic things work to know how good you have it.
Complaining and voting against your own self interest will get you no where.

What’s your metric for the economy being as strong as it could be?

consumer spending, wage growth out-pacing inflation…
Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

I won’t disagree that it’s a good post.
But I also think is the same sort of condescending hubris as a response to the economic concerns of voters (perceived or otherwise) that played a large role in Kamala getting pounded.
Maybe the question to ask is, if the economy really is so great, then how come so many voters didn’t think so anyway?
If it’s a matter of messaging and information and media wars or whatever, then what’s the dem plan to stop loosing that war so badly?

What do you think I am, a democrat?!
Speaking of, I can’t wait to see how they’ll tweak their platform and messaging to win back voters next election.
No fucking way dems could possibly not learn a thing again from all this again!

If Trump and his social media cohorts tell all the MAGAs they have eleven fingers, there isn't an anatomical chart in the world that would change their minds. They don't care about any data outside of their milieu.
