You'll be happy you did. You don't want to have to take your dog outside every time it needs to go outside.
No doubt about that.

The English Setter i had when i was younger we'd just let out the back door (no fenced in yard) and say "stay in your yard girl" and she'd just stay in our yard. It was fantastic. 20min later she'd come stand at the back door and wait to be let in.

not saying that’s necessarily the case, but it would sure raise red flags for me

We bought our dogs from a breeder who breeds probably a half dozen different breeds of dogs. They have a huge farm out in the middle of nowhere Iowa and all of them seemed to be well cared for with plenty of space to do their thing. Other than showing up at her door after a 4 hour drive to pick up our puppy only to find that she forgot to put our appointment in her calendar and having to scramble to get us out the door with our new dog, it was a good experience.

My dogs are both idiots so there's that. The big one probably wouldn't run off because she's almost ten and is devoted to where her food bowl is but the little one has gotten out a few times and has bolted immediately. Glad its a ways through the neighborhood to a well used street or she'd be a puppy pancake.

I feel pretty good about these people. Both parents (of the puppy) live there for this liter. The facilities are clean and nice. They have wait lists for their border collies and mini american shepherds of over a year because of the success they have had in those athletic dog competitions where they run, jump, etc. We go to their house more than once to interact with the dogs before we actually take the puppy home.

This isn't a puppy mill. Nothing but good reviews from people from what i can find. Just a rural family who breeds dogs on their family farm. They mainly just breed border collies and mini american shepherds. But every year or so have an english setter liter because the husband is a hunter so they usually have 1 or 2 as pets/hunting dogs for their kids.

My wife has bad dog allergies so we were very limited as to the types of dogs we could get. We had to have dogs that have hair vs. fur or she is a hot mess. Gotta pay for doggy hair cuts every 5-6 weeks now but it's that or not have dogs.

completely understandable

i’ve gone the breeder route, as well as the shelter route. in my experience, shelter dogs have been less problematic, but that’s likely because i’ve gotten puppies rather than older dogs with histories

my views are also jaded by working too long in the pet industry and seeing some of the worst case scenarios. people can seem above board, but even those who are licensed can’t necessarily be trusted. the short of it is that many people suck and are assholes, and if they can cut corners to make a buck, they will...even to the detriment of animal welfare

I think it's fine to buy from a reputable breeder, others will differ, but that is fine. I bought my boxer as a puppy from a breeder. Similar situation. They live on a farm east of KC in Chilhowee. They raise the pups in their house and have two kids that help. They only raise boxers. I drove out before picking him and they were very nice and kept the puppies inside and allowed them outside under supervision. And they have good reviews. I would consider getting another boxer pup, just haven't pulled the trigger and they are $1,800.

Until you have to board them while going on a long vacation. Our boarding bill for 2 dogs while we are on a family vacation over the holidays will be close to $900.

I love my dogs but holy shit, I need to invest in a dog grooming and boarding facility.

we’ve decided to go the house-sitter route instead. planning on $100/day, but we’ve also got critters in addition to a couple of dogs

i’m also not a fan of many kenneling situations

I normally just have family watch my boxer, but I guess if your whole family is going, that might not work. Probably another reason I never go on vacation unless I can take my dog.
