That point stands.

And I’m grateful for him! He was a great 3rd or 4th best option to have on this team.

(5th best crimscore in the tourney but let’s still call him 3rd or 4th best, right?)
You wanted Yesufu to play over him iirc.

Some of the worst hot takes of the year were Yesufu over CB in the rotation, and needing JW at the 5.

Since it did not happen, pretty hard to say what would have happened. Self prefers experience over raw talent at PG. Yes would have been great in the DH role given time on the floor. DH hit some key shots and started to play defense much better as the season wore on. We had the luxury of Remy.

I have trouble seeing how anyone can say Yes would have been "great" at anything (this year at least) after watching him play this season? He was Self's 4th favorite little prior to bobby getting hurt.

He needs more time at KU to develop. Scoring a bunch of points on a bunch of shots on a bad drake team does not translate to the big stage of KU. Even Remy struggled. Hopefully Yes sticks around. We need him next year at minimum to be a DH backup.

A bad Drake team? They were ranked.
Interesting on that note is that they returned everyone except for Yesufu and added a four star freshman, and they were significantly worse.

were they ranked? they were an 11 seed.

I dont remember if they were or weren't, you may be right, but thats surprising given their seed.

Look at their schedule. They beat nobody. So even if they found themselves ranked at one point, they were bad by KU standards. And relative to playing at KU / in the Big12, Drake is probably always "bad".

I really like Yesufu. So don't want to talk bad about him. He kept a great attitude all season even though his role wasn't what he expected. I think next year he could be a rotation player. But I don't think he has any chance to beat out DH.

So if one of three of our goodbye candidates ( Dave, Wilson, Braun ) come back and no one transfers, we are still probably favorites for the B12 and a top 10 team.

If 2 come back, any combo, we are preseason 1.

I think JW is nuts if he leaves. He should be able to make comparable (enough) money through NIL to what he'd make in G League or overseas (especially when you factor in living and eating for free). He could be a completely different player with 2 more seasons at KU. I'm not sure what his rush is. He wasn't a top 15 recruit in his class or anything iirc.

Moving goalposts as usual.

They were better than Arizona State

I fell in love with yesefus potential as much as anyone, and he was underwhelming this year. It took him awhile to adjust to selfs structured system on offense, that cost him minutes early. He was used too shooting more at drake, and it took him awhile to figure out how to affect the game without scoring.

And the defense he played at drake didn't cut it here. Had to adjust on defense. But yesefu was playing the way self wanted and being effective before Remy got healthy.

I think yesefu has a big year next year. Assuming christian and jalen are gone, there is no reason yesefu doesn't start next to dajuan next year

There could be a reason:
He gets beat out by a transfer.
Or a healthy Pettiford.

I do think it would be tough to play DH and Bobby together for significant minutes because Bobby might be even less of a threat to shoot than DH.

A lot depends on how ready GD and Rice are, and if CB and JW leave.

Is GD a capable enough ball handler to play the 2? Seems unlikely early on.

Harris will be shooting 44 percent from 3 by then. At high volume. Don’t worry about it.

But but but his % is only that high because he takes open/good shots! If he took more bad/guarded shots it'd be lower.

Dang, Pettiford never hit a single 3?

0 fer 3 from deep, total. 112 minutes in 14 games.

I trust in Self don't get me wrong, but I also dunno how he manages to find so many guards who can't shoot. ESPECIALLY when it's so obvious we need guards who can shoot if we're gonna contend. There's a big void to fill due to the departure of Remy.

Yes's numbers suggest he could be a good shooter here. But, I agree, and that makes me wonder if we are looking to the portal for a combo guard that can shoot.

All of Och, CB, Remy, and JCL are very likely or definitely gone. The only good 3P shooter returning is Clemence and possibly Yesufu. Dick will be the best 3P shooter on the team and has a lot of weight on his shoulders. This is a 2009 season coming up unless we either go bonkers in the portal and/or Dick, Rice, and Udeh are all ahead of schedule and first round worthy.

Also in regards to Pettiford, I remember watching Frank in 2014 and thinking there was little chance he'd ever become a 40% 3P shooter.

Self told UNC media that Pettiford is going to end up being really good. Not sure if that means for us or someone else, but that guy has a lot of room and time to grow.

if it's a "combo guard" who can shoot, it pretty much has to be enough of a combo guard to be able to be thee only guard out there for stretches, right?

Yeah pretty much anyone will have to be able to play alongside Dajuan, but we need someone who can play instead of Dajuan, and be the only small handler out there for stretches too.

yeah definite 09 vibes. Lots of new pieces we'll likely have to replace. But instead of having two burgers already in the system who are obviously ready for big roles, we may have a barer cupboard yet. What we do have on our side is the best recruiting class we've had in years, better transfer portal rules, and Bill Self.

And I say barer, but as it stands right now, Dajuan Bobby Yes and Cuffe has still got to be one of the better stashes of guards around.

Assuming Dajuan doesn't take a step back with the new personnel (and in no way do I think he will), I am not worried about his spell minutes on the ball with Yes, Pettiford and maybe even a transfer in the mix.

But those guys have to take steps. Only time we have rolled with one ballhandler was 2018 and Dajuan has neither the talent level nor physical stamina of Devonte'. Remy coming back also helped Dajuan on that--he was getting worn down in February.
