OK. I understand the impulse. Nevertheless, I disagree. I think a crisis like this points out the need for devolution of authority.

If, for example, the public health officials in Seattle had the ability to decide on their own how best to utilize their influenza study data to track COVID, they might have been able to halt community spread earlier.

More to the point, solutions that will work or be necessary in New York will have little relevance to Alaska or Nebraska.

This is such a wide and diverse nation that devolution/federalism is critical not just to finding population-appropriate solutions, but to flattening the curve as well.

I'm not sure I fundamentally disagree! My more general point is that if the top of the federal government had acted like this was a serious-as-shit, life-or-death matter - which it is! - 6-8 weeks ago, the tailored, local responses would have been better across the board.

For the majority of my life I have never understood why someone would willingly step foot on a floating petri dish.

Cuomo getting Bush 43-like bumps, and Trump not, also bodes well I think that Trump isn't getting undue credit for his botched response.

April 2020 is going to be wild.

If, for example, the public health officials in Seattle had the ability to decide on their own how best to utilize their influenza study data to track COVID, they might have been able to halt community spread earlier.

More to the point, solutions that will work or be necessary in New York will have little relevance to Alaska or Nebraska.

This is such a wide and diverse nation that devolution/federalism is critical not just to finding population-appropriate solutions, but to flattening the curve as well.
well then what’s the fucking point of having a “United States” with the CDC, NIH, DHHS, etc...?

I can't speak for DC. But you'd think having those federal agencies, AND states that have some sense of autonamy creates additional protections. So that, if the CDC shits the bed, as it has, individual states can do things to protect themselves, especially where, like in NY they probably needed additional restrictions especially when it became clear it was a problematic area.

What's distressing to find out, is that from Trump on down, no one picked up the ball. The president was not prepared nor knowledgable. The federal agencies were woefully unprepared. And other than complaining about Trump's failures, individuals like state governors have for the most part also done very little.

Maybe it's a tragedy of the commons situation where everyone thought someone else would take care of it, but I personally think having additional levels of protection should be a good thing.

totally agree

i’m actually quite pleased with Gov. Herbert here in Utah, and think he’s done relatively well in all this. that said, the lead officials for both Salt Lake county and city, basically have the reigns to do what they see as best for the metro...with the governor’s full support

Couple flees to north of the Arctic Circle in bid to escape Covid-19 Couple flees to north of the Arctic Circle in bid to escape Covid-19 "Our community ... is not a life raft for the rest of the world," said Dana Tizya-Tramm, chief of the Vuntut Gwitchin.

In a scramble to escape the coronavirus, a couple drove more than 3,400 miles across Canada and then flew another 500 miles deep into the northern Yukon territory.

Upon their arrival in the remote community of Old Crow, the visitors were swiftly ushered into self-isolation and eventually sent packing.

Dana Tizya-Tramm, chief of the Vuntut Gwitchin, told POLITICO that the man and woman from Quebec landed Friday in Old Crow, which is north of the Arctic Circle.

“I do feel for these individuals — when I spoke with them they were legitimately scared,” Tizya-Tramm said Monday from the fly-in community of 250 people about 60 miles east of the Alaskan border.

“They had sold everything that they had, drove across the country and jumped on a flight to our community. He said that they literally just picked it out on a map and figured it would be the safest place in Canada to weather a Covid-19 storm.”

I interrupt this thread with a public service announcement.....
There are a bunch of people who think they know what the fuck they are talking about.
I'll let everyone in on a little secret. They are not nearly as knowledgable as they pretend to be.
Take my post for what it's worth. Which is not much but it's worth just as much if not more than 99% of the other COVID-19 posts on this and the other threads.
Sorry for the interruption.
Carry on.

If we don't have a vaccine and/or a cure by then, I'm probably going to give people permission to kill me - if I don't kill myself first.
