What did the arresting officer do wrong?

This situation sucks.
Or actually, this situation doesn't suck.

It's a mandatory arrest scenario under Kansas law. And those are are good laws, imo.

In the state of KS when a call goes out for a domestic disturbance someone is getting arrested. It sounds like Willie was the aggressor, broke some stuff and that means he is getting cuffed.

Short term, barring no further news comes forth he plays. This isn't serious enough to warrant a suspension.

Long term, this would 100% be something that Willie and all parties need to address in the off season. My guess is that this isn't the first time something like this has taken place and if things aren't put into place this won't be the last.

That definition of the events is even in the best light for Gay, according to his attorney. That alone borders on the line of probable cause for assault under the black letter of the law. Glad he didn't break her face, but put yourself in her shoes and it's a scary situation.

Just to clarify my personal opinion.

If the only thing that happened was a verbal altercation and Willie broke a vacuum, this is exactly the type of shit (timing strongly taken into consideration) that you sweep under the rug.

If he assaulted her, cut his fucking ass.

If he threw the vacuum at her, and missed, yes, arrest him.
If he had a temper tantrum and broke a vacuum, nah.

I don't agree that cops should sweep this kind of stuff under the rug. DV is a huge problem and one of the things that make it unique is that (in most cases) the only way LEO's can remove a potential threat to someone is by arresting the other person--can't make them leave their own house. Respond to DV call, see that a crime has probably been committed, take him in, investigate the facts, release with a small property crime. Everyone's safe.

This may be a moronic question but consider the source (me).
Who assesses the value of the damage/s and what is the difference between $999.99 and $1,000.00 worth of damage/s in regards to the charges?

Charging documents state Gay damaged a vacuum cleaner, wall and door frame during a confrontation with a woman. It's being classified as a domestic violence offense. Gay is charged with misdemeanor criminal damage under $1,000.

This seems to be the beginning of the other side of the story. I think his playing status is in jeopardy.

Is this Bergan guy correct though?
Reports are it's just criminal damage.

Probably threw a vacuum through a wall/door to get through a door. Really quite bad optics. The damage being under $1,000 is surprising though. Seems to be on a low end for a damaged vacuum, wall and door if all 3 were damaged.

If he plays fine, if he doesn't play fine. I get both sides of it in terms of playing this weekend.

I assume the damage valuation was to just keep it from being a more severe charge. Gutter's right that it gets a little subjective there. Obviously destroying a car is going to trigger the higher letter of crime.

Maybe patch a wall for 500 bucks - Tdub?

Optics on this don't look great because of the tag line and like CnB mentioned Gay is a big dude. He clearly broke something (s) in anger. That is a scary situation but I would rather him bust up a Dyson than I would her face or body.

Either way this is a distraction the Chiefs did not want heading into the most important game of the year. My guess is, as long as anything further doesn't come out he plays.

Just from a football stand point he needs to get his head right, focus on the task at hand and let his legal team handle the rest.

Regarding this situation and CnB, what happened with Dalvin Cook this season?

I think from a team standpoint, they should do now whatever they would have if it was Thursday of Week 4. Not sure what that would be. This seems to be in a grey area whether any threat against a person was made--the formal criminal charges don't exactly help clear that up.

Unless you have evidence of physical assault you play him.

You also have Reid, Veach, Spagnuolo and Flajole (maybe include Mathieu) sit down with Gay and ask him point blank if he physically assaulted here. If he says no, you play him. If he says yes, a variety of paths become available, but he definitely does not play.
