Re: Weather
The lateral force associated with 140 mph winds is huge. Luckily most commercial buildings in FL should be designed to withstand this without structural damage. Windows, doors, roofs will need lots of repairs. It's the flying debris that can cause a lot of damage. I had photos of a Walgreens in Moore OK after their big EF5 tornado. The building was outside of the direct path and structurally was fine. But an empty dumpster from the parking lot went took flight and left a dumpster shaped hole in a parapet wall and then took out every rooftop Mechanical unit in it it's flight path opening holes into the store that poured in water and destroyed the merchandise.
The biggest threat is storm surge. While the wind can create forces in the low hundreds of pounds per square foot. The storm surge forces can be at the level of thousands of pounds per square foot. That stuff can be catastrophic. Some parts of infrastructure are designed to resist this force and others designed to break free and decrease the surface area and therefore decrease force to the superstructure.
Disney is a good case in point. There are things in the park that will tear away at around 110 mph. Some will just fly away and some pieces are attached by airplane cable so that when they break lose, there is a reduction in the amount of destructive flying debris. Some pieces of facades will bend to reduce force on the structure and then can be bent back into place after a major event with a procedure in place to determine if the metal was fatigued in the bending/stress relief process and therefore should be replaced.
All that said, there is only so much I can do to protect you Shirley. These events will be more frequent and are expected to be larger in the future. We know this cuz every update in the building codes includes increased design forces for buildings in the southeast. But I can find you nice house in the Empire. You can bring the grandkids, they will enjoy the mountains as much as they do the ocean.

Large of you to offer, japhy, and I appreciate learning about storm damage abatement enginerding, but what I want to know is, how far is the Empire from Aurora, Co., where the Venezuelan gangs have taken over?

I've been told the gangs in the Empire make the Venezuelan gangs in Aurora come off as being a bunch of Tinkerbells and Peter Pans.
Them folks go all RFKJr. up in there.

Weather.com
States there is 3% chance of rain right now. It's 100% raining a half a mile from me.
As I say/ask too often, is there no one who works for weather.com in Chicago who can look out a window?
If they want to pay me $250k a year (working 5 days a week - two weeks paid vacation - and 10 paid sick/personal days a year) I will sit/stand by a window for 12 hours a day from 6:00am to 6:00pm (with 10 minute breaks every hour and two 30 minute breaks for food) and update their site for them.

Re: Weather
There really is only one way to deal with these weather issues in the future. Privatize weather forecasting and use those savings to give me some unneeded but well deserved tax cuts.
I recently used some of the reverse largesse to purchase a couple of Ruffino Tamayo prints from the series, "Apocalypse de Saint Jean". My gift back to the rubes is you can come visit/view them for free at the next Solstice.
Thank you for your debt service.
If we are being intellectually honest, you know it makes sense. I will spend the money you rubes divert to me, wisely. Probably better than you would have spent it if you had it in your bank account.Hurricane Helene has derailed the Republican presidential ticket’s campaign across the South, forcing Trump’s vice presidential pick, J.D. Vance, to cancel several stops in Georgia. But the 20-foot storm surge–inducing, tornado-spawning weather event hasn’t yet changed Trump’s stance on his plan to tear down the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, root and branch.
The climate agency, whose responsibilities include providing free weather forecasts as well as tracking and predicting hurricanes, would be completely gutted under Project 2025, the 920-page Christian nationalist manifesto that purports to be Trump’s second-term agenda. (Trump has haltingly and not particularly convincingly attempted to disavow Project 2025; a recently unearthed video features one of the project’s authors bragging that there will be “one-to-one mirroring” of the policies laid out in the document and Trump’s proposals.)
“The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) should be dismantled and many of its functions eliminated, sent to other agencies, privatized, or placed under the control of states and territories,” the proposal reads on page 664.
That would effectively privatize weather forecasts, forcing U.S. citizens to pay for weather subscriptions that would include national weather alert systems for emergencies like flash flooding, extreme heat, earthquakes, and others.
Project 2025 has advanced a slew of seemingly outrageous policy positions, including tearing down staples of the executive branch, such as the Department of Education. It also proposes revisiting federal approval of the abortion pill, banning pornography nationwide, placing the Justice Department under the control of the president, slashing federal funds for climate change research in an effort to sideline mitigation efforts, and increasing funding for the U.S.-Mexico border wall.
Trump has spent months trying to distance his campaign from Project 2025, but a flurry of the Republican presidential nominee’s recent comments, which include reiterating his intention to demolish the Department of Education, has practically glued him to its policy points.
By Friday afternoon—less than 24 hours after the Category Four storm made landfall on Florida’s coast—22 people were dead, and 4.5 million locals were without power, reported USA Today.

“3% chance” means that 3 % of an assigned area will see rain.

Hmmm...I was told this by a pilot.
Maybe they have a different formula.
There seems to be a few variations of what "percentage" means.
Plus, you have to figure in that sometimes I don't know what the hell I am talking about!

Thanks. We are on the west side of Tallahassee and even west of Panama City. A good ways from the landfall point and on the west side, which doesn't have that wall of water that gets pushed ashore on the East side of a storm.
