surprised that drumpf confirming that we’ve got nukes housed in turkey isn’t getting more play

maybe not as big of a deal as it seems, or maybe just an effect of the era of drumpf

Meh, the losers of the election get to shoulder some blame as well. Dems ran such a bad candidate that it created the opportunity for trump.

Trump would have lost to Bernie.

So far, I've learned that Illini doesn't know shit about the Middle East.

LMAO. I'm sure you're an expert on the region like so many others.

You've really provided some great insight into why turkey hates the kurds...and why we should be doing border security for Syria.

I've asked a lot of questions in this thread (and never claimed to be anything close to an expert on the region) and you've failed to respond to any of them with your expert analysis.

Unfortunately a lot of people also thought a Clinton administration undermined the future...but some Dems just can't wrap their mind around that apparently. It is as if Clinton was totally perfect and wasn't also problematic as hell.

I know many intelligent people who had to decide to vote for trump because they thought Clinton would be worse.

Would Clinton have been worse than Trump? Individually, no probably not....but when it's a 2 party system many factors come into play. So Dems picked the wrong person to run against Trump and they lost. Now we're all paying for it in 1 way or another.

The vast majority of the reasons to think Clinton would be worse were due to incorrect information about Clinton, incorrect assumptions about Trump and a general sense that no Dem would be good because GOP. Most of it wasn't based on any actual logical reasoning.

Trump is a terrible, incompetent con man who took advantage of the situation and leveraged the issues that exist in the Republican Party and their primary base supporters for his own personal gain. All of those issues still exist and will still exist when he is gone.

Those issues are what we are all paying for.

Let's recap.
ISIS was beheading and blowing up people.
Meanwhile a civil war was happening in Syria.
The Obama administration and Republican congress armed the Kurds and sent a small number of troops to help them. In return, they took care of ISIS.
We had 50 special forces troops keeping the stability to defend the Kurds from Turkey so they could continue to neutralize ISIS. That's amazing. People say "we can't just stay there forever". That's insane. 50 fucking troops were stabilizing the area - yes, we can keep that size of a force there forever as long as ISIS exists.

The fact that some can defend Trump's actions are insane. Such a small American effort was preventing war and terrorism. That's both power and peace. And Trump single-handedly undid it.

Good recap. 50-100 special forces could absolutely stay forever if we wanted them to....I haven't really seen anyone defend trump on this though. He's getting slammed by both sides.

Here's basically the recap of why the Kurds are problematic (they're also not the only group trying to contain ISIS btw)...

"Turkey has long made claims of a pending invasion of northern Syria to buffer against what it sees as Kurdish groups aligned with the terrorist group known as the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK.

Kurdish YPG fighters who fought under the larger SDF umbrella organization to liberate northeastern Syria from ISIS fighters have various allegiances to the PKK. That connection has soured relations between Ankara and Washington."

It's complicated, obviously. Trump made the wrong decision in a situation that doesn't have a good solution.

i’ve still not heard a good argument for why the proposed buffer needs to be exclusively in northern syria

shouldn’t the turks be willing to shoulder some of that land appropriation, given they’re the ones pushing for the buffer?

such a convoluted history, with more moving parts than can be counted

I think that's pretty much how the Turkish govt treated it. There was a spokesperson for the Turkish Defense Ministry (I think) on NPR's Morning Edition a couple of days ago and she more-or-less said so. "Not serious" was how they treated it. I am guessing that's diplomat-speak for "you imbeciles elected THIS dumbf#*ck?!?!?! haahaaahaahaaaaaahaaahaaaa"
