Re: Royals
Meh.
This is long overdue. He'll go down as one of the best managers in Royals history if not the best. But, a very flawed manager. Much more above average than good/great.
Matheny, though, woof. So predictable, so boring, so bad. It's akin to Dayton signing Jeff Francoeur.

Re: Royals
Granted, he hated analytics, his clubhouses weren't the best. But he won and that's important.

Re: Royals
The "good" news is that we're going to lose a lot again next year, and perhaps the year after, so maybe Matheny is fired by the time we're ready to be good again.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Mon Sep 23, 2019 11:18 am Meh.

It's also true that people can learn (and I do NOT think Sherman and his group will be tolerant of stone age nonsense).

Re: Royals
Ugh. That's like the equivalent of a late payment on a credit report. The substance of the thing is ultimately insignificant, but so long as it's hanging out there, it's a major deduct to Moore's GM rating (in my book).
Re: Royals
Pat Metheny is undervalued IMHO. He has been a consistent, innovative, force his entire career.

Re: Royals
Cody Tapp, the Royals insider for 610 said that he puts it at 5% the next manager is from outside the organization, and it's only that high because of a new owner.
Basically, it seems to have come down between Grifol, Matheny and Sveum.
Grifol - Great communicator. Bilingual. Younger players love him.
Matheny - Won every year. Clubhouse got tired of him in 2018, but before that, seemed to be no issues. Former catcher, and they usually make pretty good managers.
Svuem - Old school manager like Yost. Gets pretty fired up. Hitting coach during most successful stretch in 30 years. But a really bad manager for the Cubs in 2012 and 2013. He shouldn't get the job, but I get why he's considered considering tenure inside organization.
Will likely be between Matheny and Grifol. Both ok options.

Re: Royals
I'd prefer Grifol, just for the continuity with Mondesi, Dozier, Soler, etc.

Re: Royals
Nice presser with Yost and Moore yesterday. Both guys were involved from the early parts on. Dealt with a tough period, then a great period, and then a bad period again, but they always had each other's backs.
Ned tearing up saying he misses his family, his grandkids and being home was something that I still don't fully comprehend. These guys are away from families and any sort of personal time for 7-8 months out of the year. The manager is at the ballpark from about 12 to whenever the game ends on a normal 6 or 7 pm start time. Players arrive at around 2 or 3 for a game. That's a lot of time away for those guys when they are even home, now imagine those days being on the road. Very difficult for those to have a family life outside of those 4-5 months where they don't have a season.
Granted, I know they get paid well for it, and that helps, but that's still very tough.

Matheny is the guy.
Winner, but not much excitement and has some things to change from his previous stop.

I still hate it, so boring.
But, starting to agree with jfish that it's just a stop-gap.

Re: Royals
I don't see how it's a stop-gap but I don't know the intricacies of baseball and hirings.
Matheny is young, had success in his previous stop and is well-liked by Moore.
But yes it's boring, but you shouldn't expect much else with Moore. He's going to go with the sure option, not the up and comer of Grifol or the likes.
I'd say this, I'd rather Matheny than what some teams are doing by going to a manager with no managing experience - Kapler, Ross and the like. I mean, Matheny has a winning percentage 55.5% and went to 4 straight NLCS series. He's no slouch.

This is where I’m at, it’s a ‘meh’ hire to me.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Thu Oct 31, 2019 10:23 am I still hate it, so boring.

Plus, you still have average (at best) owner, GM and players

Re: Royals
New owner coming in. I like what we have in the farm.
Moore and Matheny are peas in a pod and probably have the shortest lifespan of those 3 categories of people.
Newton: I think if all he can fall back on is his 55% win percentage, which is correctly not a slouch, it's not much considering it was with a class franchise. Matheny is going to lose a ton of games here in KC, and I really fear he's not going to look good doing it for some of the same reasons he was fired.

Re: Royals
Fair enough. I think he's ok. Not great. Not bad. Just average.

Re: Royals
Probably also fair. I think the Royals are a good 2-3 years away, so that's where the stop-gap stuff comes in. If he's just average, or slightly below average, maybe the Royals have someone they like in the organization that takes over in year 3 or 4 when they should be good.
Re: Royals
I don't think the Royals are that far off. I think next year will be like 2013.
Re: Royals
I disagree, I think KC loses 95+ next year.
Re: Royals
Which prediction? I was definitely right every year but this one.
He’s still a defensive liability with one average/above-average offensive season.
