And how long it gets circulated vs how long it takes to be taken down

Much of the problem is the algorithm, which doesn’t understand context

The lefty Qusdahl pages get zucked all the time for things like, “here’s me painting over swastikas and hate speech vandalism I found in the bus station.”

The algorithm apparently identifies it as nothing more than “swastikas” and next thing you know, Qusdahl’s in the doghouse.

It sucks tho that shit like anti-vax rhetoric (and insurrection planning?) manages to stick around and continue being circulated despite, no, really, we like totally are cracking down on it this time!

Yeah, social media has established itself pretty firmly, whether certain individuals opt out or not.

Facebook/meta specifically has been on the hot seat for a while tho. It wouldn’t be surprising to see some increased oversight, prob independent, since FB has demonstrated itself to be so ineffective at watching over itself.

I wonder if much of social media’s issues could be fixed with a simple organic news feed again. Only pages and people you wanna follow, like, share, instead of your feed being force fed to you by Zuck and his goons.

While I find this pretty gross ( why I left almost ten years ago ) I dont think it should be illegal or regulated.

Their methods of squashing of any competition is what I take some issues with.

I’d imagine something along the lines of, if a property owner put a billboard up, and allowed someone else to write something on it, and someone else wrote “let’s go bum rush the Capitol building on 1/6 here’s the details see you there,” then a buncha people bum rushed the Capitol and many of them said the billboard gave them the idea, wouldn’t the excuse seem kinda hollow for the property owner to just sit back and say “but it wasn’t *me* who wrote it on that billboard”

Then consider how the algorithm works. Facebooks basically sits back and says “but it wasn’t us who wrote it on the billboard, then wrote a code that put it up on other billboards all around the world!”

But yeah I dunno. It’s tricky. Cuz I could also see moderation/censorship becoming a mess in a hurry. But the thing is, there’s already a ton of moderation and censorship going on!

it just seems to nitpick the qusdahls for things like “I painted over swastika graffiti” (and Facebook is like BuT YoU PoStEd A SwAsTiKa!!) and completely missing the lobsters who may or may not have planned this attack right there in the open on Facebook. (BuT We CaNt MoDeRaTe OuR UsErs!!)

but yeah. All that aside, the antitrust monopoly stuff seems far more obvious, and easier to make a case against, with fewer of the icky implications that could come with censorship

You should continue to study up on the algorithms they use and how they work. Your understanding of them seems somewhat lacking.

I think there’s a lot of thoughts to consider without making it a partisan thing.
