But KU's rating preseason was as much because of Self as it was the players, there's no other explanation for how a team that lost so much would be rated so highly.
He shouldn't be docked for the fact that, unlike Tang, people already knew he is a great coach.

Self has won the Big 12 a total of 17 times in 20 years of coaching as I read last night. Consistent extended greatness has the effect of moderating the view of every next greatness he achieves. His next NCAA Champ trophy will just be another.

If Tang can finish in second place 17 of his next 20 years in the Big 12, I thing we should grant him almost greatness status because he would have earned it. It would be two decades of almost dominance.

But let's get real, Tang won't be there 20 years, maybe not even 5 years. Finishing second to Bill Self causes meltdowns out in Hooterville; the coaches, the fanbase. Self Derangement Syndrome recently pushed Huggins over the edge. He also did time in Hooterville. And if Tang turns out not to be Scott Drew's mini-me, then he will take a better job as soon as it is offered. It would be great fun if he went to Baylor next.

Oh, I fully realize it'll be Tang and I get why he's a candidate -- they were supposed to suck and then didn't but still will finish 2nd-4th.

I think Self's argument is better after what he did last season, what he lost and what he was able to do again.

We need to eliminate preseason conference projections. Too many CoY awards are based solely on "we were projected to suck and we don't". It doesn't mean that the coach necessarily did an amazing job. It mostly just means that whoever did the preseason projections did a shitty job of it. The fact that Bill Self just lost 6 of the top 8 scorers from a national title winner and is about to win the conference that has been one of the most challenging in history by potentially multiple games is incredible.

Coach of the Year shouldn't just be for "you're not as bad as we thought you'd be after we did 5 minutes of lazy evaluations of your roster".

The other day I was in the grocery store and walked past Tang and thought, 'how is this still a thing, who drinks Tang?'

Then I thought - oh, tmcats definitely does.
Tang is his kool-aid.
