It's the reaction being compared.

Me personally, I don't think it's appropriate to use that term in ANY of those instances. Some only seem to be bothered when it's "the other side".

Wow, defending Trump's comments about Charlottesville--a new low for those who routinely defend/deflect Trump's statements. But defending/deflecting his scurrilous throwback to his KKK origins, really sad.

I think you make a valid point, that it is different when a man with more than four decades of documented bigotry and racial animus, who obviously does not see all men and women as "equal", who without mining the depths of our nation's worst impulses, bigotry and racism, would not be president today, who is a member of a party that has conducted a greater than half-century, diligent, earnest, unremitting, cynical effort to divide the country along racial lines in order to gain political advantage, uses the word "lynching". But while context does matter, even that doesn't absolve democrats, who as DC pointed out, have used the word too, but shouldn't. In the same sense that no one should refer to the holocaust gratuitously.

And Illi, I did learn from you yesterday, that Trump's "good people on both sides" statement was definitely more nuanced than I was aware. That being said, I personally can't imagine how any president could possibly conflate Neo-Nazis and white supremacists with those who oppose them. Which is not to say that Antifa is a blameless, angelic group. But take a moment to think about how we view the people who resisted the Nazis in Germany nearly a century ago, with how we view the Nazis. It's a stretch to conflate our Neo-Nazis with German Nazis ~ 80 years ago, but so many unprecedented, unimaginable things have happened since Trump was elected, including the ascension of racist white supremacists, nationalists, and Neo-Nazis, that "it can't happen here" is unfortunately not the assumption it used to be, whatsoever.

Trump is awful....and while I've often said "how on earth was Hillary the best we could find to run against him"....I should also say how on earth were those other republicans the best we could find to run against Trump (and Hillary)...Kasich wasn't terrible, but he's so dull.

This is a mess. I think a large majority on both sides agree and can see eye to eye on that. We've got to do better, somehow.

When I see people like Mayor Pete and Amy Klobuchar (especially her) it gives me some hope. I wish we could also have 10 or so other republican options to be getting to know right now as well, but we don't.

The problem is that some people think that the President needs to be the kind of person they would like to hang out with and chat.

You have to be a bit of an egotistical power-hungry jackass to think you are capable of being President. The job simply requires it. You also have to fiercely intelligent, capable of appointing qualified individuals to important for roles and confident enough in yourself to trust those capable people to do their jobs.

Its entirely possible the trump experience has made "vanilla" a little more appealing to me (even if I don't realize it)....

What I looked for pre trump and post trump have been impacted by this presidency without a doubt, and I'm sure many others feel similar.

I would vote for John kasich in a heartbeat.
