The bar rescue analogy made me think there will finally be tickets available for a short while.

Then the remaining servers aren’t as talented, they don’t perform well when a throng of tourists comes in, yall go downtown instead, and going forward the bar gains a rep for bad service, looses clientele, snd struggles to attract and retain talented servers who would rather work at a bar that pays them better for their better performance.

pdub wrote: Tue Jun 22, 2021 12:01 pm I've made this analogy before but it's like that "Bar Rescue" show for me.

There's this great pub in your hood, with a 25 cent juke box, cheap beer - you've been coming here for years. The staff isn't perfect and the manager could pay them more - but it's not like their getting f'd over - and they love the environment and the people there.

Loud obnoxious guy comes in and says this needs a total re-haul. You aren't making enough money. You could pay yourself more and your employees more if you change it. Install a new digital juke box, 2 dollars a play. Let's make the menu more high end - hire a new top of the line chef - and serve more refined cocktails. There's a downtown bar that is making bank - we should model ourselves after them.

Now you probably get more customers. And you're definitely going to be making more money so your staff, new and old, will be doing better for themselves. But there will be a few loyal customers you're gonna loose - and i'd consider myself one of them.
You think the players are happy with the current "agreement"?

Then why are so many taking impermissible benefits? From coaches, boosters, agents, and shoe companies. All of that is happening and it's an undeniable fact.

Using your anology, the loud guy in the room might be the players and those looking out for their interests as top priority?

This has been discussed too, but if you want the current model to be retained, maybe schools should just stop recruiting players from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

You're a socialist. You should love the NCAA model. I shouldn't.

But, my view on it is tainted by my love for KU. I want everyone playing there to love KU as much as I do.

I would say the majority of the athletes attending the 300 D1 schools are happy with the current agreement, yes.

Brilliant. So don't afford them an opportunity at an education and potential career opportunities beyond athletics? That sounds like a helluva plan ous.

I am a bit surprised with TDub on this one. The market forces were really an "invisible hand full of cash" before all of this. All things being equal, KU will do well.

Me too.
But if we're eventually paying players contracts, then you'll get more of the type of guy who is looking for the next dollar, rather than actually wanting to be a part of the family.
And i'm not interested in 18-24 year olds figuring out how to make the most money instead of doing what college athletics was originally intended -- a competitive environment where you grew to become an adult and played more for the love of the game.

And yes, I'll stick to the love of the game despite a lot of the cynicism for that here.
Then the NCAA should do the same instead of trying to milk the system for every dollar they can.

An amateur basketball coach making 7 figures a year? Can't have it both ways.

Defund college sports and make it amateur. I am with that.

But i am not with the current arrangement and environment it creates. It has created an environment that incentivizes cheating. And we got caught doing just that.

I just argued that point a few posts ago and you responded to it, so....?

This will take this thread to great places, but there becomes a problem when somebody assigns and decides what is valuable to someone else.

The value of a bachelor degree is just wildly different to different people.

Ok, maybe my comment is a little hyperbolic in a sense.

But when your momma’s rent is due yesterday, she’s hungry too, and this ain’t the first time - would you rather say just wait 4 more years until my degree mom, or say here mom I don’t wanna see you hungry and worried about rent any more and I met a guy who can make this guy away right now?

Yea, i mean i explained part of my reasoning being my attachment to KU nostalgia. Also, a major part is that I dislike pro sports, and I dont want my favorite sport to become an unwatchable monor league version of the sport.

No one is more fine with the current arrangement than the NCAA and its member schools.

I agree. It was a reiteration and not a rebuttal.

That's the only way i think college sports can be amateur. If it's not that then i don't see a scenario where it works.

Also note, I'm not arguing against how you think college athletics should be.
I get the side of the argument where players should be paid.
I just completely disagree with it and won't have anything to do with it if it continues this course.

The bar will continue - and it might thrive - but to me, the bar won't be the same.
I'll just hang at the Shack instead.

Exactly.

Bet they sure wish they hadn't have pretended they were getting defrauded during an FBI trial. They shot themselves in the gut.

With the Cal era, I just reconciled myself to bidding wars. I like Self coaching in a more balanced league. That said, if balance shifts to the Kentucky Colonels, then we all will be screaming.
