there's this take I keep hearing.

It's along the lines of, so there's always been this presumption that our post-enlightenment civilization is now organized around science. But, this is not accurate.

Rather, our civilization is organized around capital. Science is leveraged only when it satisfies the interests of capital anyway. If the science conflicts with the capital, then the science is given little if any regard.

Case in point: climate change.

Here lies the problem, it absolutely IS reality. For over half a billion people.
You want to get a pulse on how a lot of people feel about a lot of things, Twitter is one of the better sources.
I say that as someone who feels Twitter sucks - and significantly contributes to the downfall of society.

Here lies the problem, it absolutely IS reality. For over half a billion people.

The problem is that so many of the "people" on Twitter are actually fake. There are fleets of bots and fake accounts that are purposefully generating and interacting with content to control the narrative of how it appears that people think and feel.

The entire world didn't just magically begin to feel differently about things once Elon Musk decided to put Donald Trump in the White House but it sure looked that way when the algorithms were changed to control the content in that direction.

It's no longer the pulse of the people. It's just another partisan media site along the lines of Newsmax or FoxNews.

Yep. Pretty crazy considering that they're down to one beat reporter covering KU sports, and he seems to spend most of his time making sure that the most obscure ones get equal coverage. Not worth a dime. Sad departure from the old days.

i really don’t understand why reasonable people (i consider you you reasonable generally ) choose to give musk their business. there are alternatives, including deplatforming altogether. it’s liberating…trust me

You ask an excellent question and bring up great points!
Here is long winded response.....

1. I refuse to pay a penny to Elon Musk to use his site - but I realize I still "support" it by viewing and VERY rarely posting on it.
2. I am a very curious person by nature. There are things I can (and do) learn about by viewing posts on Twitter. Or at least there are things I find interesting/entertaining - in what at times is a positive (but too often negative) way.
3. I am someone who lives alone and while I often do enjoy peace and solitude, at times I seek social interaction (thus my view and posting on this site being an example).

I would not keep going to eat at a restaurant that serves shitty food but I might keep going to a restaurant for companionship and entertainment.

Thank you for considering me generally reasonable! That may be generous of you but I like to think I am, or at least can be, a somewhat reasonable person.
As I said in my #1, I understand I am giving Musk "my business" by visiting his site but I refuse to directly give him my money to use his site.
Absolutely there are alternatives. Definitely much better ones. Bottom line, I have addiction issues. I fully admit I am addicted to the inter-webs (social media). I know ways to distract and cope with that addiction but no doubt I do give in to my social media addiction.

No doubt I am better off when I am off my computer and reading a book, giving my full attention to watching a movie or sporting event, doing a puzzle, whatever, while I am at home, but like I said, I am intrigued by/with what I see and read on social media - and news sources - on the internet. I enjoy doing research, and learning. I used to go to the library to do that. I probably still should but now a shit load of information is available in my apartment at my fingertips without having to get up from my chair.
