Self's "leash" has been noticeably longer this season. Maybe it's because we don't have much choice. But he's giving Storr and Coit lots of leash. So much so it's cutting into Griffen and Shak's minutes when we're better with those 2 out there.

We should have a 7 man rotation of

DH
Zeke
Shak
Griffen
Kj
Bidunga
HD

I think I follow, but not sure. Will prob offer my own thoughts, but first lemme ask:

who do you think is getting leashes that are too long?

Are they the same guys whose minutes are sporadic and inconsistent?

KJs injury might become Storrs last chance at finding something positive to add to this team. He's gonna get more minutes if Kzj misses time...if only because Bidunga can't stop fouling.

Also...please play Rylan at least 25 minutes. minimum.

having Rylan and Zeke in together at the wings does so much to open up spacing.

Storr has had a LONG leash.

Coit has a long leash.

"I hope it’s not significant and hopefully he won’t miss time. But I think we probably will be very lucky if that’s the case.”

- Self on KJ

if he DOES miss time, prob have to start a small ball lineup.

Yes, starting Flory makes sense too, but we also don't want Flory to have 2 fouls by the under 16 TO.

I mean, Harris and Adams are still combining for about 30% of our floor minutes. Neither has, in my opinion, justified that much run.

yea, I follow.

tho I'm not sure if those guys have more been "sporadic and inconsistent," or more just been consistently meh.

Griffen needs to play more. We need his shooting and scoring. He's even been slashing some. And the effort has been there on defense and rebounding, diving after loose balls

Self wants shak on the floor more. That's fine, but that shouldn't come at the expense of Rylans minutes. I'm willing to trim Dajuans minutes just a little for a little more shak.

I like coits game, and hope he can be a spark for us at some point. But it's getting harder to justify his minutes. Starting to feel like those minutes should all go to shak and Griffen

I...guess?

but so many other seasons, if parts were "misfit," it was as much as anything prob cuz of things like injury, or getting F'd by the NCAA.

With this season, we have pretty much all the guys we wanted to have, don't we?

and yet...
I think it is - like most things that go VERY wrong for VERY competent people - a case of multiple things going wrong at once.

Bill’s impatience with newcomers.

Bill’s loyalty to established guys.

The portal making for tantalizing roster adds.

The portal making for greater risk of losing guys.

Guys not developing.

And I will not DENY that there can be complacency and distraction from NIL etc.
Add to this - perhaps it is also true that the changes have diminished one of Bill’s biggest strengths, which is figuring out which #50-150 guys have the potential to become all-conference (or better) types.

It’s harder to bury those kids and keep them around.

And maybe Bill isn’t all that much better than his peers at scouting transfers.

“[KJ] will play moving forward, but he won’t tomorrow,” Self said. “He had a separated shoulder that at this time we feel is week-to-week.”

This could be a blessing in disguise if our goal is (still) to win it all.

Storr and Griffen have a big opportunity.

Self has historically had a skill for identifying the 50-150 guys to develop, for sure.

But, the portal era is a different thing now.

Maybe Bill isn't all that much better than his peers at scouting transfers.

Or, maybe it's difficult to make conclusions about portal era thus far, if it's also difficult to distinguish the portal era from what has historically been one of Bill's weaknesses:

stubborn loyalty to certain players, even if or even as they seem to be underperforming.

I can't help but wonder how much a factor the Hunter/Dajuan/KJ core is and has been, and maybe it's something about part or all of that core that makes it difficult to successfully plug-and-play transfers.

Yeah. I continue to think the answer is more of an “all of the above” than it is any one thing.

1) yes. Maybe what he's been best at.

2) yes.

3) maybe. Maybe he has less control with NIL instead of dealing directly with Adidas and TJ like back in the day? Or maybe not. Maybe he has more control? The portal and NIL era is so new that it's hard to know for sure.

4) it's a mixed bag for sure. HD Zeke McCullar Coit Shak (i am sure I'm leaving some out) have done well.

5) i don't see this. I think (unfortunately) those are the best options for us to win games.

6) McCullar worked. Zeke works. Shak works. Coit works. Griffen is beginning to work. Storr hasn't. Timberlake didn't.
