Lots of 3D printed guns now too. Hard to put that particular toothpaste back in the tube.

Yes, exactly like cars. Creating a database to track the current and past owners of a weapon is not even remotely complex or challenging. A college intern could code the database and a rudimentary GUI interface to access, read and update it. The guns already have a unique serial number assigned and printed right on them.
Please forgive my ignorance. Isn't there already a database to track the purchase of a LEGALLY purchased gun from a legal/licensed seller? I honestly don't know but assume there is.
Regardless, like any other object, once someone purchases something they have the ability to give/sell it to someone else. ZERO chance there will ever be a fool proof way to track everyone who buys and sells a gun after they are initially legally purchased.

On a related note, I both applaud and laugh at my Governor (whom I have directly and indirectly worked for and am actually fond of - but don't agree with everything he has done and not done) for banning "ghost guns". Of course they should be banned but how the heck will that stop them from being manufactured and people owning them - just because they are "banned"?

if they’re banned it means more severe repercussions for possession

won’t stop everyone, obviously, but will stop some

these rebuttals of “well it won’t stop every shooting” need to stop. some progress is better than none at all

In theory, you have the same situation with cars. The only thing that forces people to follow through on getting their cars properly licensed under their name is the need to have legal tags on them to use them.

So force the same thing through. Require all shooting ranges and ammo sales to verify proof of gun registration. Massively increase punishments for usage or ownership of unlicensed guns.

As for "ghost guns"? Require that the same requirements for purchasing a gun be applied to purchasing these "buy build shoot" packages. Make punishment for unlicensed ownership of them very severe. All purchases of guns or gun building kits should be tracked, registered and require licensing. I have to show my drivers license to buy freaking Sudafed but I can buy a ghost gun building kit with nothing more than a credit card.

The GOP loves having people in prison. Get rid of all the dumb drug laws on marijuana and psychedelics such as mushrooms, MDMA and LSD and put people who do not follow new gun laws into prison.

Those are still just a tiny drop in the ocean of guns at this point. It is still incredibly hard for a troubled 18 year old kid to get his hands on a working 3D printed gun. There are still plenty of changes that can be made outside of those and I know law enforcement agencies have been trying to figure out what to do with those for several years now. Europe is ahead of the US in trying to solve that problem as they are facing them more regularly due to how much more difficult it is to get regular guns there.

There are dumb laws on psychedelics?

Sorry, don't think those should be treated like weed.

I do not believe that they should be allowed for recreational purposes but there are mental health treatment paths and other medicinal treatments in which they should be legal. And we shouldn't be putting anyone in prison for possession of them unless they are clearly distributing them. It's a waste of taxpayer dollars to put them in jail for something so dumb.

Interesting read from Michael Fanone, one of the officers attacked on Jan 6th:

https://www.cnn.com/2022/06/05/opinions ... index.html

I found this to be the most interesting:

"If banning them outright seems like too extreme a solution to be politically palatable, here's another option: Reclassify semi-automatic rifles as Class 3 firearms.
That would mean that someone wanting to purchase an AR-15 would have to go through a background check, fingerprinting and review by an official from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives -- a process that takes anywhere from 12 to 16 months. And since Class 3 weapons can't be purchased by anyone younger than 21, it would solve the issue of emotionally unstable 18-year-olds buying them.
A Class 3 firearm reclassification would also make those who are approved to purchase these weapons subject to an annual check that they are complying with federal regulations regarding secure storage of the firearm, and to confirm their licensing and other paperwork is up to date. All of these hoops and hurdles are sure to reduce the civilian demand for these weapons."

Details on what else is considered a Class 3 firearm: http://www.wendlsweapons.com/class-3-weapons

I doubt it will ever even be seriously proposed, which is a shame. Dems seem to be too hardened by repeatedly banging their heads against the GOP wall that they don't even put much effort into a real solution any more. They are just trying to bite off tiny, palatable chunks that they hope might get passed, not anything that is actually a common sense solution.

Cowardly to say the least. Take a page out of Republicans playbook and double dog dare Senators to vote against mandatory background check and waiting period for EVERY purchase, 3D printed ones included. Of course Manchin and his ilk would object. This is no time to hide.

The framework released Sunday by the bipartisan coalition of U.S. senators includes lifesaving gun safety measures, mental health investments, and school safety funding, including:

ENHANCING BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR BUYERS UNDER 21: Establishing an enhanced background check process and investigative period for buyers under age 21 that would require searching additional state databases and checking with local law enforcement before a sale proceeds.
IMPLEMENTING AND INCENTIVIZING RED FLAG LAWS: Providing much-needed funding to support implementation of existing state Red Flag laws and incentivize new states to pass Red Flag laws.
DISARMING DOMESTIC ABUSERS: Expanding the current prohibition on convicted domestic abusers and domestic abusers subject to a final restraining order from buying or possessing guns beyond those who abused their spouses to also include those who abused someone in a continuing romantic or intimate relationship – addressing what is known as the “dating partner loophole.”
CLARIFYING THE DEFINITION OF A GUN DEALER: Clarifying existing law on what it means to be “engaged in the business” of selling firearms, so that it is clearer when unlicensed people selling guns to strangers are required to obtain a Federal Firearms License and run background checks on all sales.
CRACKING DOWN ON GUN TRAFFICKING: Increasing penalties for gun trafficking and straw purchasing, which is currently only prosecuted as a paperwork violation.
INVESTING IN MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES AND ACCESS: Expanding community mental health services for children and families, funding school-based mental health and supportive services, investing in telehealth mental health services to expand access, and investing in community crisis intervention programs.
PROVIDING SCHOOL SAFETY FUNDING: Funding school violence prevention efforts, training, and the implementation of safety measures at primary and secondary schools.

Letters and faxes are an extremely effective way of communicating with your elected officials. Many legislators believe that a letter represents not only the position of the writer but also many other constituents who did not take the time to write.

Dear Senator,
As your constituent, I support the recently released bipartisan gun safety and mental health framework, and I am urging you to turn it into legislation and pass it into law immediately.
[if you have a personal story, mention it here]
[can you personalize your relationship with your senator? have you voted/volunteered/donated? mention that here]

I do not support that people under 21 are still allowed to buy AR15s.
