I took one class of 'law' in undergrad, Torts, and what little I remember is the extent of my knowledge of the law.

If the House votes to impeach trump this week, does the trial continue even after Biden is sworn in?

The only way I could imagine a trial lasts that long, is if the senate agrees to actually hear witnesses this time.

So he could be removed from office as early as the 19th, the first day the Senate could vote on it?

I believe there is precedent for an impeachment trial being conducted after the impeachee (?) is out of office. There are still important consequences.

The delay is entirely self-imposed. The Senate could vote today if McConnell wanted. Or deemed necessary.

Its almost like the GOP is trying to keep the door open for that Trump 2024 campaign.

I don’t think so. I just don’t think Mitch wants people to have to record a vote. It is 100% the case that things are actually worse than we think, right now, and recording a “no” vote will look very stupid.

That’s prob a good take.

But man is it a cynical thought that anyone wouldn’t want to go on record as wholly condemning this shit. If a “no” vote would look stupid, why would anyone be worried about just voting “yes” then?

I suppose it’s not a matter of keeping the door open for Trump, so much as it is not wanting to alienate the magaheads

. . . but, why would anyone want maga heads for their base? I know, votes, but they're a minority of the whole republican base.

I've been saying this for years. Why not distance yourselves from the KKK and instead appeal to moderates?

I haven't paid that close attention to the R House primaries - how have "moderate" Rs been faring against Trumpies?

Granted, you'd think the math has changed over the course of the last week.
