Mich, how would you feel if Obama’s personal lawyer was peddling pardons for the right price?

I think a public defender is Trump's best option.

I can’t wait to hear what kind of defensive argument he puts forth

not to mention what kind of squirmy deflections the GOP senators try to hide behind

I really don't know whether, on the balance, it would be a good or bad thing for GOP hopes in the 2022 and 2024 cycles if Trump is convicted (and rendered ineligible to run in 2024).

For impeachment? I don't think there's any such thing.

Well let's start it! THere has got to be someone in Cloud City up to the challenge. In costume of course.

There’s already a significant portion of American conservatives who are all-in on the idea of Trump as some sort of martyr.

And while I think the GOP as a whole is more than ready to wash their hands of Trump, I also think they’re even more afraid of loosing the maga vote.

Who knows, maybe there’s some public defender who can squeeze the trial in between like, his parking ticket and minor-in-consumption cases.

Right. Trump himself is obviously enormously unpopular; the election results on their own spoke to this, and his favorability has gone even deeper in the tank since then.

But if you make a martyr out of him, you risk his popularity (without all of the baggage) being transferred onto the next MAGA candidate.

It’s weird to imagine a maga candidate without the baggage.

Donald John, at least, is a master of his own brand of rhetoric, and of dog whistle politics. It’s a tough act to follow.

But I dunno if we can really call Trump “enormously unpopular.” More like, enormously polarizing. He still got 74 million votes, and only like 20% or republicans think he bears any responsibility for the whole Capitol attack.

They need to recognize that you have to take one step back to take two steps forward.

Punt on 2022 elections, and maybe 2024. Build a platform. Appeal to moderates. Distance yourself from hate groups. Stop relying solely on fear mongering (both sides could do this last one - sorry Ous).

I can’t disagree, but that seems like a tough row to hoe.

How do you feel both sides rely on fear mongering?

It's their only option. Tying your boat to hate groups and the opinions of the elderly is just a way to make sure your base gets smaller and smaller.

The majority of political discourse in the US for the past 20 years has been less about, "here's my platform and why it works" and more about "They're wrong, and I'm not that". And it's gotten worse and worse with time. It's not something I feel...it's something that exists, like gravity...it doesn't matter how you or I feel about it.
