Based on what we had, and happened through course of year, nah.
In a historical vacuum, sure.
Agreed. Just whining about the results while ignoring the circumstances that created them is pretty silly. Some tough breaks and some self induced problems resulted in an overall disappointing season compared to what could have been. If this is our worst season in the last 30 then Kansas is living the good life as a program.

Since Vick left the team, we have played away from home against teams seeded 3, 5, 6 and 9 in the tourney and lost to all of them by double digits. Northeastern was our only win vs a tourney team away from AFH without Vick and Dok.
The team was playing much better though. No more roads games were ahead either. ISU invaded Sprint again in the only marginal loss. Auburn is for real and requires a few days of prep for EVERY upcoming opponent

Good behind the scenes look at Auburn before matchup against KU. Pearl hammered him that KU didn’t get back and they could run.
And that they did...

I sometimes wonder what this staff was thinking during parts of this year. I really hope this year was a wake up call for everyone in that office.

tait was on sports radio yesterday and was talking about comments Self made during the season about enjoying the challenges this year, with this team. thought it might have re-stoked the fire that has waned over the past 14 seasons of relatively easy successs

Am I wrong to think that a single title over that stretch is perhaps not sufficient to justify such waning?

One ‘ship, one runner up, and one final four. Good but not great relative to expectations.

yes and no...guess it depends on just how much weight is put on the tourney as the measuring stick for success

It should be an enormous motivating factor.

I’ve said that same thing since KU last won in 08. Great. KU won 14 in a row but during that time frame they won exactly ONE Natty. Now it depends on which you value more. Some of those years winning the regular season was the ‘national championship’ but other years with the expectations heading into the tournament certain seasons were complete failures. Consistency of 14 years straight or the dumb luck sometimes that you need to win in March. Which do you value more. Not sure if there is a straight answer for that.

Then I would say, yes, it's wrong to think that.

I think the frustrating part is that, based on just the one title, the perception of our success over the last couple decades (going back into the Roy era) is not in line with reality.
Put differently - there's a compelling argument that KU has been the best college basketball program in the country for the last...three decades? Three and a half?
But you won't hear casual fans name KU as such.

Last sentence nailed it. Many casual fans think Kansas is good but not great because of tournament success or whatnot. Those same fans will look at titles and think UConn is a more successful program because they’ve won 3 titles in 20 years.

Honestly, it's just a different version of the same problem the Big 12 has, from a reputational standpoint.

What the casual fan thinks is of no interest to me. I don't gather my self worth based on what the casual fan thinks. I know KANSAS is one of the 5 best college basketball programs of all time.
What the casual fan thinks is of no interest to me. I'm an adult.

Ok. I'm an adult, too. While I wouldn't say my self-worth is tied up in what other people think about college basketball, I do take pride in KU being known for being good at college basketball.
So, it annoys me that a particular way that only kind of measures how good a program is at college basketball is generally the way people measure how good a program is at college basketball, and that KU has underperformed in that particular way.
