quite frankly, Bill should be focused on outside shooting
I am hoping one of (or both) of Labaron Philon or Rakease Passmore are good outside shooters.
Otherwise to the portal we go looking for a shooter again? Is Timberlake done after this year?
Doesn't sound like Passmore is a shooter. "His shooting is getting better and better" translates in coach-speak to "he isn't a good shooter yet but we hope he will be eventually".
https://www2.kusports.com/sports/2023/n ... %20country.
"Passmore, who was recruited by assistant Norm Roberts and committed Oct. 11, is also a guard with similar size at 6-foot-5 but plays as what Self called “a prototypical Kansas wing.”
“He’s got size. He’s got strength. He’s explosive, can play above the rim,” Self said. “His shooting is getting better and better and he should be able to guard anyone.”"

we have a km problem. not a hd problem.
and a scholarship player problem.

We would unquestionably have a more favorable view of HD if McCullar was healthy and playing and some of our shooters could shoot, yes. I think we all agree with that.

I agree.
We get KM back and I still have high hopes for this team.
I'd really love to know the truth about why he is sitting out and/or who is holding him out. Is it an Embiid situation?

To Illy's credit ( despite the fact Self would have been the difference in our winning that game ) Arkansas was a very underrated 8 ( I know they were an 8 but still ) as they were top 20 in Kenpom and a top 10 adjD.
This year if you get a 6 seed like South Carolina or Utah State or a 5 seed like Washington State and you might be in a better spot ( IF Kevin is back ).
If you get a 5 or 6 like St Marys, Illinois, Kentucky ( I know we beat them but they are on the rise ) or hell, even BYU or Texas Tech, you could be in trouble.

were we pursuing Knecht?
imagine if NT had that level of production

Our biggest miss was overlooking Cam Spencer for Timberlake.
UConn was heavy after Timberlake and after they didn't get him, they went with Cam.

not that i was following it all that closely at the time, but it seems like knecht came out of nowhere

I hope we don't get any more potential super-star guards who also happen to be rapists.
That hurts production.
I hope we get back to recruiting freshman and developing talent, and only use the portal to fill holes in the roster
We have 3 good freshman prospects supposed to be coming in. Seems like that's what self wants to do

I hope the recruiting picks back up as Self's career starts to wind down over the next decade. Self has a handful or so of recruiting classes left that he'll be around to see from start to finish.
Do we agree the chances can't be that great that Self is our head coach in 2035? Maybe 7-10 more years left before he rides off into the sunset?
The 2025/26 class is wide open and we are in on a lot of the top 30 guys.

KU and uconn were his finalists. Beleive it or not, uconns fan base was really butthurt when Timberlake chose KU, and Spencer was their back up plan
Spencer ain't very good defensively either, but his confidence and offense has been much better for uconn than Timberlake has been for us

There are 2 things I haven't heard mentioned in this big hunter/zuby/udeh situatuon
1) I think self expected to lose zuby or udeh to transfer if we got hunter, but I don't think he expected to lose both
2) KJ adams is a big part of that situation. Having an undersized forward who can't shoot was a big part of why we needed hunter. It's tough to build around a 6'6 non shooting forward in this age of basketball, and KJ will always be a bad fit for a traditional big

I hope the guys were recruit actually stay at Kansas.
1 of 4 members of our class of 2023 left before ever playing for KU.
4 of 4 members of our class of 2022 are gone. One to the NBA and 3 transferred out after 1 year
2 of 4 members of our class of 2021 are gone. Both transferred out after 1 year. KJ Adams and Zach Clemence remain.
4 of 4 members of our class of 2020 are gone. Muscadin (RIP), Jossell, Grant-Foster (killing it at Grand Canyon) and Bryce Thompson all bolted.

Err, he has looked good to me defensively in the Uconn games i've watched.
Double checked and he is 2nd on the team in DWS ( defensive win shares ) and steal %.
He leads the starters in defensive rating.

1) I agree.
I also can't imagine he expected to lose all of Rice Yesufu and Pettiford. Unless they were force outs and he just wanted to clear the cupboard and start fresh?
2) I agree...And you don't want Kj being a 5 long term, even though he was better than Udeh and Zuby at the 5 in 2022/2023. Kj and Hunter fit great together. Offensively and defensively they compliment each other well. And Kj does so many of the little things well. 1 through 5 this team fits together really well now that Furphy has emerged as a shooter/scorer (and a surprisingly good rebounder). And optimistic me thinks that Elmarko Timberlake and McDowell have benefitted from these game where KM has been out. Hopefully, even if it's just a tiny improvement, that can pay off for us in the NCAA tournament. Those 3 guys accounting for even just a few extra positive possessions/moments can be the difference in a single elimation tournament for a team with such a small margin for error.

Nowadays it seems you've got to recruit your current players just as much as the incoming freshman and transfers. It's wild. The DH and Kj Adams players are becoming increasingly rare. Which makes me like them, and live with their shortcomings, even more.

For the staff i doubt pettiford and yesefu were surprising transfers, but rice probably was. He projected to have a much bigger role and a probable starter with dick and Wilson leaving

Guess we should have recruited him not Timberlake. No clue how he defensive metrics look, but that whole team is stout. I've just read uconn fans bitch about his defense
But then again, people would think dajuan was the worst player ever born if they based an opinion off of KU fan comments

Elmarko seems like MJ Rice 2.0, another "talented" kid who doesn't seem to understand what Self and staff are asking of him.
