Even with the play off droughts, the Chiefs move on quickly from RBs generally. Priest and Okoye were obtained fairly late, like the Williams' and Marcus Allen.
And playoff appearances were both infrequent AND short.
To put in in perspective, prior to the arrival of Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs had just 5 postseasons out of 50+ where they won at least one game and got to play more than one game. Since Mahomes, the Chiefs have had 6 straight seasons where they won at least one playoff game and (I believe) an NFL record five straight where they have won at least 2 games.
The very EARLIEST there could be, during Mahomes' time as starter, more Super Bowls without him than with him - is February 12, 2028. That Super Bowl doesn't even have a host city yet.

I didn't think we'd ever see another era like what the Patriots did as far as consistently winning their division and being in the Super Bowl, let alone that it would be KC that did it next.

It's all just so absurdly improbable - tell someone the morning after the Chiefs lost to the Steelers in the Divisional Round of the 2016 playoffs that, from 2018-2024, the Chiefs would go to four of six Super Bowls. It barely seems possible.

When the Chiefs blew a 28 point lead in the 2014 playoffs to the Colts to lose their 8th straight playoff game as an organization, I thought they were doomed to never get over the hump.

The ONLY way it could happen would be for Chiefs/Reid to (1) move on from a B+, 8-11-win QB, and (2) strike lightning with the replacement.

I'm not sure WHICH of those two things was longer odds. Together, they're like +50000.

I complain about Veach's moves in the draft but if he really had more of the credit in landing Mahomes ( as it's been rumored ) he kinda has a free pass forever in the end.

Mahomes has now played a 17-game playoff schedule.

He is 14-3.

He has completed 67.4% of his passes, and has 44 combined TDs (to 8 combined turnovers).

In other words, this MF put up an MVP-caliber season, AFTER a full season of wear-and-tear, and against exclusively good-to-elite competition.

Just for reference:

Brady 35-13.
95 TD's. 56 turnovers.
62.5% of passes.

I'm not that good at math but I'm pretty sure that 44/8 > 95/56 (and that 44/17 > 95/48).

Yep.

Knock on wood but where would Mahomes rank if he wins in two Sundays from now in terms of QB's in NFL history?

In gross terms, third. He'd trail only Brady and Montana in playoff wins, and Super Bowls.

In REAL terms...I'd say second (with only Brady to go).

Every great NFL player, especially every great modern era NFL QB, has been helped to make them what they were by an elite HC and/or elite WRs/TEs. You cannot be an elite QB without it.

Agree on all counts. Mahomes needs to win this one to stay on Brady's pace. Man, a win vs. Brady and TB could have really changed some things historically. A shame the entire KC OL had to be injured at the same time.

Absolutely. It's a team sport. Brady had Moss and Gronk (and others). Mahomes has had Kelce and Hill (so far). Montana had Rice.

I agree...but there's also a part of me that's totally ok with it. Supernova 25-year-old Mahomes beating Brady on his last legs wouldn't have really PROVEN anything, the same way Brady beating lineless-Mahomes didn't really PROVE anything.

I'm ok with letting the 2000s and 2010s belong to Brady (like the 80s belonged to Montana), and the 2020s (and potentially beyond) being Pat's.

Yeah but 6 to 3 is a lot better than 7 to 2 in the Super Bowl title chase.

Absolutely. And I would prefer for Mahomes to finish ahead of Brady in rings (because, unless he decides to walk away "young", every single other metric will be Mahomes').

But I'm ok if this ends up being Jordan/Bron.
