Interesting.

Those states at least don’t have the rep like Florida does, of being one big retirement community.

i wonder how many of the elderly floridians actually call florida “home”, rather than just being snow birds?

That reminds me, it's barely worth mentioning under the circumstances, but if there is a silver lining to the pandemic in Florida, it's that it seems the majority of the ~ 70,000 thousand snow birds who infest Sarasota each winter, went "home" early.

Infest, whoa.

What is it about second homeowners that makes them so...unsavory?

Great point!

Feral - Not surprising but I find it interesting. I know some/many Chicagoans decided to pack their bags and head back to their "winter/vacation homes".
6,7,8 or so weeks later, some are probably questioning their decisions.

Florida also has a lot of colleges/universities with high enrollments. Same isn't true for those other states listed.

Your typical undergrad student is not counted as a resident.

But, I would assume a lot of the Florida snowbirds would do what they can to be considered residents given the 0 state income tax--provided they have income.

Right, but if a huge chunk of the population leaves states like Maine to go to places like UF, there's a good chance they spend their 20s and 30s in FL rather than ME.

I think Florida certainly has a large retirement community, but with a metro like Miami, and then a couple million in a place like JAX, where no one in there right mind would retire to, that balances out. It's big ass, awful, state.

Traffic congestion. The 1 hour drive to Tampa becomes anywhere from 1 hour to 2.5 hours. Crowded everything - grocery parking lots, grocery shopping itself, as well as getting from here to there takes longer. All of a sudden you need to make reservations at nearly every restaurant, or no go. I'm sure if I depended on the migratory patterns of the tourist/snow bird plague, I'd feel differently.

But worst of all, despite being here for several months every year, too many are rocking ETTDRC, "Entitled Texan Tourist at a Dood Ranch in Colo." vibe that's universally loathed, if you know what I mean.

They're called Snowbirdus Americanas and can often be seen at their favorite nesting spot, Walmart.

The "Well back home they would give me...it would only cost...they don't do it that way..." talk gets tiresome. One wants to say, "It's 10 degrees there and 75 here, feel free to leave anytime."

I've noticed that in recent years they don't take the salt packages or sugars and sugar substitutes from the cafes so much as in the past. You could tell when it was snowbird season as the restaurants disappeared them all from the tables.

A friend of mine who teaches in a 2-year college in NC used to say that all he has to say to elicit laughter from his students is "So, this guy in Florida........."

I think this is it!

Shirley's post discusses many of the headaches surrounding tourists - the traffic, the crowds, the entitlement, blah blah blah. And I tolerate it, even welcome it as much as I can, cuz I know their annoying bullshit is also what furnishes my career.

But I think the thing that gets to me the most is, how y'all will come all the way up here just to talk about how much better life is back there.

Okay, then stay back there!

Pepcid is the only thing that works on Minhin's heartburn. She's thrilled.

Geezer - Good to hear she has something over the counter that works for her.
Pepcid AC was my go to. Still is but I take Nexium on a daily basis so I usually have no need for Pepcid.

U.S. deaths soared in early weeks of pandemic, far exceeding number attributed to covid-19
An analysis of federal data for the first time estimates excess deaths -- the number beyond what would normally be expected -- during that period.

...

The analysis suggests that the deaths announced in the weeks leading up to April 4, based on reports from state public health departments, failed to capture the full impact of the pandemic. Those incomplete numbers were widely cited at a time when many states were making critical decisions about closing businesses and taking other actions to stem the spread of the virus.

The analysis also suggests that the death toll from the pandemic is significantly higher than has been reported, said Daniel Weinberger, a Yale professor of epidemiology and the leader of the research team. As of Sunday, more than 54,000 people had been killed by the novel coronavirus, according to numbers reported by state health departments and compiled by The Post.

All you gotta do is look at the drastic rise in deaths attributed to pneumonia.
