A whiny commie fascist socialist leftist would prob say something like, “the issue with a for-profit suicide hotline may be something like, the culture could become less “how do we help these vulnerable callers,” and more “how do we help these shareholders.”
But that’s where the commies is wrong, of course.
We capitalists wanna keep suicidal folks alive!
…so they can go die in factories instead.

If you're trying to make a point via sarcasm, the point you're trying to make is evil.

it's one thing if the GUMMINT thinks they can spy on us and create a database of our personal info to hoard. That shit is so fascist it might as well be Antifa!
But if a bidness wants to do it, well, won't someone please think of the shareholders?
Especially a Facebook size bidness that's too big to fail, so of course it'll succeed.

I get a kick out of this. If the FBI does a wire tap on a potential terrorist, but the paperwork had the wrong date on it, people would be outraged.
When Instagram does keeps track on ALL it's users ALL the time (not just when they're on instagram) it's welcomed because the ads you get are specific to your interests.

Outraged…over a clerical error? Meh, maybe or maybe not, depends on what color terrorist.
And “it's welcomed because the ads you get are specific to your interests” seems like such a brilliant capitalist propaganda gaslight. As if folks wouldn’t rather just skip the ads either way.

To me the difference is person-to-person snooping. Government spying involves people invading the privacy of people, because it's going to be people looking at the results of the snooping.
Whereas we have machines gathering data on us constantly. It's generally not a person looking at another person's communications or data, because that wouldn't be profitable, or in most cases legal.
Of course, I might be telling myself that to be able to live with myself - a big part of my job is essentially selling data about people and their buying behaviors. It's completely de-personalized. We go through annual legal training and lots of hoops, as we should, to keep it that way.

I think you're being naive thinking that machines gathering data doesn't also provide the ability to do it person to person, and that that isn't already happening. Only, they then have that ability on a billion people instead of one.
Saying, "it's
generally not...." is not very comforting. I think as often as these types of laws have been broken...or just not regulated in any meaningful way...it's pretty safe to say they're not abiding by the law or doing what's right in the absence of law.
I actually think it's worse done en masse like that where you're talking about swaying elections, who sees what information, targeting outrage at public gatherings, etc.
At least with the person to person stuff, it impacts one person. Not an entire population. If a CIA agent targets my grandma to get her to vote for a candidate, big whoop, When the next Cambridge analytica tries to get everyone's grandma to vote for a candidate...it has real repercussions.

Careful bro.
The last thing you wanna do is to be all self-aware about capitalism.
Next thing you know, you might end up like Qusdahl.

sooo
All those socialist fascists in Europe enact regs to protect consumer privacy
Facebook throws a fit and threatens to just quit Europe
Europeans call the bluff and say, “life would be very good without”
Facebook walks it back, says of course they wouldn’t actually leave Europe heh heh that’s an awful big market, but still come on you guys.
So what’ll give? Will the socialist euro bros win with their job-killing regs?
Or will the free market once again prevail in letting Zuck continue to treat private personal data like just another commodity?
Stay tuned!

That’s another thing - doesn’t this big stock dip come as a result from the reports about the quarter in which Meta was announced?
As in, it almost seems like the markets DONT want Zuck getting even more control over their virtual worlds?

Meh, you'd have to look at who was behind the big sell off to really know "what" the "market" was "saying".
I owned FB stock maybe 3 months ago, but sold it and moved what was in there somewhere else, which turned out to be incredibly lucky timing (got out of FB Tesla and Netflix all before they took huge dips)....the last 2 days I have started taking nibbles at FB. I think this is a much more realistic valuation and still has upside. I haven't gotten back into Tesla yet. Rivian just took a big dip so I grabbed a little of that even though it might turn out to be a bit of a gamble.

Contrast with Craigslist learning trafficking was an issue on their platform so they countered with shutting down the entire personal ads section
