So, we had a holiday wreath still hanging over the top of our front door. Predictably, come Spring, it became a nest for some small songbird and, in time, her eggs.

Last night, around 10:00, there was a strong THUD at the door, enough to stir the older kids from bed and put me in "get away from the windows!" mode.

I peer out the window nearest the front door, and don't see anything of immediate concern. No intruder. No potted plants knocked over. Shit, the wreath is still there.

And then I look a few feet down the walk from the front porch to the driveway. There sits, calmly, a VERY muscular cat, with mama bird helplessly wriggling between his jaws.

Motherfucker had launched himself head on into the wreath, and plucked out the prize at the center.

Mrs. Fish says, "what do we do now, we have four orphaned baby birds in a nest on our door!"

So I did what I thought was the most sensible thing in the moment: I took the wreath off the door, laid it on the front porch, and assumed that nature would take its course overnight.

I thought this story was gonna end with omelets.

Had a similar thing with bunnies on Easter....week or so earlier found a nest of bunnies in the yard. Made sure to mow around them to not disturb scare or endanger them. Week goes by, everything all good. Wake up 1 morning and there's an adult bunny flattened in the street by a car right in front of my neighbors house maybe 30feet from the nest. I feel a sick feeling in my stomach that its their mom...another few days goes by and now the bunnies are obviously not being fed so they abandon the nest in search of food or their mom...1 dies that day (I left the dead 1 by the nest where it was and he was gone within hours by who knows what #nature), the other 3 survive that day. Kids are aware of them being alive by now, but my research tells me they're not old enough to survive without their mom at their young age for very long...then temps drop. Bunnies have now moved into a sheltered spot near my front porch. Easter morning 1 of the remianing 3 is dead. I dispose of him/her so the remaining 2 don't have to be near the dead sibling. Next day another is dead. Later that day the 3rd goes. Thankfully the kids weren't upset..i explained what happened and we did some reading about bunnies to take their mind off it which was fun.

I bought a salt water reel but will be fishing in brackish waters.
Any tips?

What's nice about living out in Cali is that everyday feels like a vacation weather day. Today's high in the low 70s and cloudy, not humid. Perfect weather.

for real tho where are you fishing? What fish? What kind of lures or bait? Are you sure you have enough beers?

How many calves/what percentage of a herd can a rancher expect to loose either way?

It could be a number of factors, including other predators besides wolves.

But the big question is, how do we balance the economic loss of rancher’s calves with the environmental gain of apex predators?

I think if you lost $38k youd feel differently.

Ranchers need to adjust by getting some German Shepherds to protect the herd.

Domesticated you mean. Wild wolves are majestic creatures.....and devastating predators.

Great white shark killed a NY'er in Maine in Harpswell, first ever fatal attack reported - and maybe the same shark was just spotted not too far from my hood.
Now they're advising to not go any deeper than your ankles in the ocean.
Good thing i'm camping at Sebago ( LAKE ) this weekend.

Well his argument would be, let me kill the wolves, the things that are loosing me money.
So the glory of the system isn't just pure business - it's now being restricted by American regulations.
I lean towards protecting wildlife if it is actually proven to be endangered for sure - but if it's not, and they are fucking your property up, sorry wolf.
