When I was a grad student, there were several post-docs who worked in the same lab and they'd schedule all their appointments (eye doctor, dentist, etc.) for when the boss was on vacation because our boss was such a dick to work for.

At least your adviser took a vacation!! While my postdoc adviser was a dick in many ways he never questioned doctor appointments. The library was in a different building (yes, there was a time when everything wasn’t online) and people would hang a coat on their chairs and slap a sheet of paper with “in library” on the desk and take off to do chores.

What a self centered jerk; sure wish he would do more impactful, meaningful things with his money...

"Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was the top American philanthropist in 2020, giving away $10.1 billion to non-profit efforts associated with climate change and education, according to a ranking released this week by The Chronicle of Philanthropy. MacKenzie Scott, the ex-wife of Bezos, ranked second on the list with donations to a wide array of non-profits that totaled $5.7 billion."

And he just announced he is donating $200 million to the Smithsonian:

But for real, good for him in one sense don’t get me wrong. But the whole philanthropy thing still just seems to ring kinda hollow, don’t it?

Often times, the whole rich guy charity work is rooted in self-serving tax breaks and shit as it is in actual philanthropy.

I mean if Bezos really wanted to be nonprofit then pay your workers a goddamn living wage. Maybe Amazon would become known as a better place to work, with less turnover, and not so much bad press as an employer.

If he wanted to contribute to some greater good, he could also always just, you know, pay his fucking taxes.

The dude is worth hundreds of Billions, with a B. He could almost single handedly end homelessness, hunger, so many social and environmental issues. It’s hard to fathom how much economic power he wields.

But instead, of putting more of that power toward good, the vast majority of that wealth is still hoarded. his priorities lie not in any greater good, but in things like high-brow space leisure tourism. As if zero-gravity will make your dick bigger.

Spare me the philanthropy bullshit. Dude’s still one of the greediest MFers of all time.

If you could make everybody poor just so you could be rich, would you do it?

Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah!

You have serious "rich people" issues.

So there’s a preschool full of kids. There’s 20 toys for the kids to play with.

One kid takes 19 of them, and keeps them all as his and his alone. The rest of the kids have to make do with the last toy.

One day the kid says, I can make do with just 18, I’ll afford everybody else another toy to play with.

Twocoach’s reaction is, “the kid with 19 toys gave one to everybody else, how generous!”

And ousdahl is labeled as the one with the issues.

This is a horrible analogy. The toys didnt fall from the sky. The kid hired others to build him 19 toys at a price that THEY agreed on. He paid them.
Then he gave away a toy. Now theyre mad that they agreed to build them and mad at him because he has toys that he negotiated a price to have built and its unfair because he has them.

Cool story; very edgy. Worked in a kid angle so that it really makes it seem extra mean to try to make your point. Score!

But your silly example has nothing to do with anything.

I take issue with the behavior of Amazon when they violate the rules on how they treat employees just as I would with any other company. People should be paid for the work they have done based on the payment agreement between the worker and the employee. But I don't begrudge a person for building a business into a very successful business.

And that "pass" I am allegedly doling out is what specifically? If there is a specific complaint about Bezos or his behavior, I'd be happy to review it. But this whole "rich people suck, they should give all their money to the peons that made them rich" is as lame as the "I pay their salary, I can say whatever I want about them" sports fans.

It's just dumb. And this coming from me, a person who in general has some "people with lots of money" issues myself.
