actually, I was trying to point out a different irony

automated self-checkout machines (in lieu of staffed registers) not being made available because of lack of staffing.

Yeah.

Somehow I manage to get stuck in the line behind a bunch of yall who can’t find the bar code on a box of twinkies. Every time.

I dunno if the human staffing is more to watch out for theft, or to just help those who can’t help themselves.

There was a psychological study done, that if a person is backing their car out of a parking spot in a parking lot that they'll take significantly longer if there is someone waiting on them then if no one is around. It's apparently a power thing (I don't know, I'm not a psychologist and don't want to be accused of being a know-it-all).

Anyway, I wonder if the same thing is going on here. It's like, welp, I had to wait in line 2 minutes, so I'm damn sure gonna take my sweet time here, the line of people behind me damned.

If it's not that, I have no idea. People are slow as all get out though. I've noticed that usually even when there are 6 or 8 checkouts that if there's a wait, when I get to my station, I'm usually done before the other 5 or 7 people even though they all got there before I did.

Maybe I just buy less shit
I only came to kick some ass...

Yeah, first thing can be nice as can later in the evening after the post-work/dinner prep rush.

Or, they could just open all the damn self-checkouts.

And yeah, part of it is quantity of items purchased.

I’m usually breezing through with some lunch meat and Dot’s pretzels and a case of sparking water cans, scanned and paid for in about 90 seconds tops.

Other customers roll through there with a shopping cart overloaded with enough items to feed half the population of Fort Worth. Cuz that’s pretty much how many people they crammed into their 1 bedroom economy Airbnb.

And yeah, I’m inclined to believe studies that suggest yall will be entitled assholes to the general public around you, especially on vacation.

It was about two Thanksgivins ago, that's two years, on Thanksgivin, 99 put off going to the grocery store until the day before Thanksgivin. 99 loaded up the buggy with turkey and all the fixins for Thanksgivin. Waited forever in the checkout line. The lady in front of me had issues getting her card to work and left. Then 99's debit card wouldn't work, neither did his credit card. Seemed their POS system was down. Couldn't take payment. 99 had to leave the turkey and all the thanksgivin fixins at the krogers and go to another store.

This is the first summer in 24 years that we have not planted a garden. Our gardens are pretty minimal, veggie wise, but we grow a lot of our preferred items; lots of tomatoes and parsley and peppers and even more basil. I used to make two or three gallons of pesto a year as it was our family's winter staple but I saw this morning that we were on our last jar. Our investment interest in CO has required a two week per month pilgrimage to the Empire, and because of this we knew our little plot would turn into a jungle without the daily weeding and trimming of the plants. This morning I went to the farmer's market and bought a half pound of fresh basil. It was a morning of gustatory and olfactory bliss--I pulled the fresh sourdough cinnamon rolls out of the oven and iced them before I fired up the Cuisinart processor. We're set for a couple more months.

I didn't plant a garden this year either. My rosemary did not die off this last winter, which is a first, and I did have a volunteer tomato plant pop up about 4 weeks ago so I put a tomato cage over it. No blossoms yet.

I will bring some cherokee purple tomatoes next time I come to Lawrence or you come here for the flat file show. Ours are starting to pile up. I took a dozen plus a few more to the Empire for the 3D printing last week. Dana and Kim got them. I heard there was a BLT sammich fest in Saguache afterwards. We picked up some olive/lemon loaf bread at Ibis yesterday. I put some sheep's milk cheese spread on it and a slice of the tomato and then sprinkle lemon basil flowers on top. Pretty simple and very tasty.

My daughter has one of those. She walks her cat around Lawrence in it. She wears it in front, not behind though. Her cat loves the damn thing. She calls it his space capsule.
