Marcus Garrett is 10th all time steals at KU, with 181 total.

Darnell Valentine is career leader at 336 in 4 years.

Mario Chalmers is second all time, with 283 in 3 years, including the individual season record of 97, which he did twice.

raw steal numbers don’t quite capture what i’m talking about

Yea.

In terms of on-ball pressure, Garrett was qualitatively superior

There's not a lot of Darnell film, but we've discussed so much how Mario's were passing lane steals.

Garrett could just do it all, but his on ball stuff is legendary.

Dotson had a ton of steals in 2020, too, but don't recall those being a bunch of on-ball stuff--maybe just an advantage of guarding the other teams' PG's.

Tangent, I liked Remy aggressively ripping away 50/50 balls last night.

How often would Marcus hound the ballhandler all the way back against the half court line, and all of a sudden a set play for them became a live ball turnover for us.

Josh Jackson is underrated in the defense department because he did so well on offense and because he was a freshman.

He still lost assignments because he was young but was a good natural defender...and then had to play stretches out of position.

If we are talking about overall defenders. His name never gets mentioned enough but if you ask anyone during the 08 run who was the best overall defender it is easily Rush and that was even after his knee injury when he lost a little bit of his athleticism.

I think Trad was talking specifically on the ball pick pockets but yes, Rush was best overall and Chalmers best off the ball. Throw in RussRob and you had a nightmare on the perimeter.

Same...although a few were after his own mistakes.

DH stealing the ball from the ground was 😍

I remember MG being better as a defender when he wasn't playing out of position at PG. His best defensive was at the 4 imo.

Valentine was sculpted and fast. But his shot was Garrett like oftentimes. If only there had been less Napoleon Dynamites on the roster.
