Certainly.
No one is debating the $$$ involved in sports.
But it's not college sports anymore.

is "but it never was" as dumb a response as "but it's not college sports anymore (now that the $$$ is out on the table rather than still under it)"

I am down for the recognition $$$ keeping KU vibrant. And the condensed Western Civ summaries. . .

I don't know about every school, but the P5's like KU, the student-athlete scholarships don't seem to come from the school's general fund, but rather from the for-profit athletic departments' raised funds.
I'm at a smaller school now, but athletics are still a big deal.

At a meeting where I was informed no faculty would receive raises because the governor had frozen tuition. I was unironicaly informed with great excitement about the new $250,000 marching band practice field.

The accounts are non-fungible.
unfortunately, this is all too true and a main reason i left academia. KU is sitting on a $300+ mil endowment and yet its tenured faculty has decreased by 34% in the past 12 years? to be clear, i don't blame athletics for this, but it plays a part. and the resources, focus, etc. are so disparate from what a university should be doing that it bothers me.

see, e.g. https://www.kansan.com/news/as-an-alumn ... 933cc.html.

sorry, i promised to digress like an hour ago. i'll do better this time.
Probably almost time shift to an off-topic board because many, many conversations before athletics, the topic of the KS BOR vs. the KU has to happen.

Also, as an outsider that has a household in to the KU B-School, something I've noticed is that there are quite a few faculty that have a hard time swallowing the pill that the profitable schools have to carry some of the other departments. That's kind of how it works, right? Otherwise, those tenure positions are just gone.

BOR. DAAR (Dumb as a rock). Also let their "team" thinking and behavior favor the purple spot on the prairie.

(It is here I note, a-fucking-gain, that Blue Chips and The Program were released in 1994 and 1993, respectively. Whatever issues folks have with amateurism and/or the academic rigor of student-athlete life...those issues have been able to drink and even rent cars for quite some time now.)

I don't think there's anything dumb about pointing out that, not only are you hell-bent on fighting the tide, you're actually pissed off about waves that came ashore multiple dozens of years ago.

How can you possibly enjoy something with flaws this (apparently) fatal, that have existed for some/all of your life?

Unless you are much older than I think, every single championship KU has won during your life has come AFTER shit got pretty seedy in college sports.

So...you're wanting things to go back to how they were in the 50s? The good 'ol days?

Not sure the speed limit analogy works.

Or, for it to work, you’d have to add something about how lucrative it is to go 80mph in a 25, and how the cops look the other way when the Mercedeses go 80 but throw the rusty Subarus in jail for 26 in a 25, or something

If you want to make a different point, of course feel free, but all I'm really hearing is that you have the warm-and-fuzzies over the 50s. Or, if not the 50s, some other period of time when the speed limit was more to your liking.

Or:

Your favorite BBQ place serves one sandwich with cheese on it and they call it the MIZZOU-wich.

Yea, I know, don't care for that, but it's still a great BBQ joint.

New owners: We've decided to serve cheese on all our BBQ unless you specifically ask for no cheese, all our menu items are going to go up in price by 20% and will be named after MIZZOU athletes and the whole bar is going to be painted yellow and black with tiger paws.

OK, well, there's a BBQ place down the road that has much better BBQ reviews but was themed and a bit over the top, but I preferred coming here because I have since I was a kid, I may still come here but it may not be my go to anymore.

I get it!

You, personally, do not like when the players get money.

You, personally, did not like it when it was against the rules, and you, personally, do not like it now that it is allowed.

I, personally, think that's a very icky and gross way to choose to go about things, all things considered!

No, Calvin and Hobbes is/was a great comic.
You're more like Doonesbury.
