It's also a must for a high-traffic vacation/resort course. You're going to have golfers of all levels, and you have to keep things moving.
I think one of the biggest issues with the growth (or lack thereof) of golf is that so many golf courses overly punish beginning to average golfers. So dumb to see municipal courses with impossible greens, difficult pin placements, crazy narrow fairways, super high rough, etc.
Totally discourages newer players.
Also, love watching a player hit a tee shot into the fairway only to find themselves in a unkept or shitty section. I tell players all the time to move it to better grass. You hit it in the fairway, you shouldn't have to hit from a shitty lie because the greenskeepers is either an idiot, or lazy, or the course just doesn't have the funds available. But there's always some fuckwad in the group that makes a comment about "playing it as it lies"
Exactly.
....and for the love of god play the correct set of tees.
What, you don't like playing the black tees with 26 handicap! Fucking jerk!
For reals though, there is no shame from playing from the white tees.
I'm currently a **12 handicap and usually prefer the Blue Tees. But, I'll play from the Black or White tees if the other 3 players prefer that.
**And for the love of God, if I could get my fucking wedge game under control I'd probably be an 8-9. My short game has completely gone to shit over the last 12 months. Driving, Iron play, putting, sand and trouble shots are all doing fairly well. But the god damn short game is about to make me go crazy.

Playing from more-forward tees isn't a cure-all, though; I am above-average, distance-wise, but struggle with knowing where it's going to go. Moving up tees, for me, often just results in skinner fairways in my landing zone. So, more second shots from the rough.

I fluctuate between a 1hcp-4hcp most of the time (lots of fluctuations because i play 20ish times a month)...i typically play whatever is 1 up from the tips (blues most places), but we also play the whites plenty....i consider myself a pretty good golfer and i rarely play the tips.
This French Lick trip half the 8 guys want to play the tips at the Pete Dye course in 1 of the 2 rounds we play, which is like close to 8,000yds. Totally stupid. There is one guy of those 4 who want to play the tips who is actually good enough to do it, he's won our city tournament like 6 or 7 times, has played in 2 Korn Ferry Tour events (missed cuts both times), and hits the ball a freaking mile...but the others are just long hitting mid single digit handicappers who i beat nearly all the time...idiots. i feel bad for their forecaddie because he's going to be looking for 3 of those guys' tee shots in some fucked up spots. There is a 300+ yd par 3 from the tips there. No thanks. My group is doing blues 1 round and blacks the next (blacks are 7,200yds and all the golf anyone who doesn't play on TV would ever need).

I played a tournament in 2018 that was something like 7,300 yards.
No thanks on doing that again. Although one of the guys in my group could hit his driving iron 325+. He was 6'8", probably 250 and 23 years old.

Playing 5-6 irons into greens (or laying up on par 4s) = not gonna have a good time.

I've managed my way around some long courses, and relative to handicap i am a very short hitter. I hit driver about 250ish and 3wd about 220ish...but anything that long becomes such a grind. As a serious golfer i do find that enjoyable occasionally, but most of the time there is really no reason to put yourself through that sort of grind and inevitable frustration.

Absolutely. Much more fun to make (or have looks at) birdies and pars than make a bunch of 7 and 8s.

I will say - after league, a group of us scrambles until dark. I really want to buy a non-conforming driver for the scramble. Would be a blast.
I also fervently believe that the MLB Home Run Derby should be conducted with composite bats.

We're going down to Big Cedar this weekend and I'll play Payne's Valley on Saturday. Really looking forward to it, although I pulled something in my midsection last week and about collapse after every full-tilt swing.
My buddy played Paynes Valley and had nothing but good things to say.
It is designed to be very forgiving off the tee so that golfers of all skill levels can enjoy themselves which i think is really a good way to design a course like this.
Update: my god, what a course. Course is fun and surprising, service is first class.

Awesome. Glad to hear you had a great time.
My buddy said the same about the service. Everyone was genuinely nice to him he said. No stuffy country club feel.

I have to say, I fucking love playing golf and wish more people played. It's one the best social activities mixed with a very healthy mental challenge.
But, god damn, if the culture (i.e. country club feel) doesn't ruin so many experiences.

Ya. Even as someone who understands how to navigate that world, it still is strange and unappealing to me.

Woodland back in contention for the first time in a while...feels like it might be Rory's day though.

Rory back in the winners circle and immediately jumps to one of the favorites for PGA Championship. Only DJ has better odds to win (on DK Sportsbook at least, didn't check every where).

Pretty much the same here. I'll admit that I do like some of the country club vibe, but it can be so over the top that it discourages newer people from getting into the game. But, I don't like playing at a fucking goat ranch either.

A place should be able to do the country club vibe without the stuffy/stuck up bullshit...but often times it seems that environment is mostly caused by the actual members at those places.
Augusta is a prime example. I read a story somewhere about a member who was actually reprimanded by the club for "golfing and practicing too much". Like wtf does that even mean? Augusta is only open a handful of months per year and their members are encouraged not to golf too much? Strange.
Maybe i am living in fantasy land, but i think some of the pageantry and prestige (which can be appealing) can exist without being so pompous.
