"The U.S. earlier Monday said it was working to assist hundreds of Americans still there. Advocacy groups said as many as 60,000 Afghan interpreters, drivers and others who assisted the U.S. military, CIA and U.S. diplomatic personnel over the years, along with their families, remain in the country, at risk of retribution from the Taliban."

Hundreds vs 60,000

vs

“Afghan interpreters, drivers and others who assisted the U.S. military, CIA and U.S. diplomatic personnel over the years, along with their families”

So did Unc lie?

"Despite assurances to the contrary by Mr. Biden and other top administration officials, Americans and Afghan allies were left behind, though the State Department couldn’t provide precise figures."

What is our threshold left-behind number? How many in number and as a %?

I recognize it’s zero for both ideally but what are we willing to expend in cost and lives? I’m sure that we would lose x lives to save y. What are the points of emphasis? x=0?

How many US lives are we willing to risk for getting out how many Afghanis? Put that on the record with a Congressional vote

The % of Afghans who helped us that we are abandoning to be hung/beheaded (or have already died) is way more than 1%. So there's that.

Those poor people are fucked. We certainly couldn't save everyone. But the fact we have former military running rescue missions to get out tens of thousands of the people we are leaving behind speaks volumes.

And after 4 years of meltdowns about everything (much deserved) there are crickets around here about all the misleading, half truths, and outright lies our President has been telling us.

Trump struck a deal with the Taliban and today was the deadline.

What the fuck did you expect?

Do you honestly think Trump would’ve done a better job?

We made the deadline that the two Congressperson who covertly visited to "see what was going on" said that we had no chance of making. Were they lying or just grandstanding for political reasons?

I harbor no illusions that we could remove, or even identify, every possible person who helped a US soldier or military effort over the last 20 years. I just doubt that 60,000 is even remotely close to the right number.

Yeah, I don’t think it’s realistic either. People are desperate as hell. Can’t blame them.

Plus, look at the visa disaster the Trump administration created over there. A shit show.

I don't care what Bush, Obama, Trump or Biden has said or done over there. Just get this nonsense over with and stop invading and occupying countries for BS reasons.

LOL we made the deadline because we left 60k-ish people that we told we weren't going to leave! The senators said we wouldn't make that deadline in regard to Biden assuring everyone we wouldn't leave our people or allies stranded. Pay attention to what you're talking about bro.

You doubt the estimated number why? Because you want to. There have been multiple sources/groups consistently saying the number was much higher than what the white house was estimating. There are Afghani journalists that have been on TV giving similar estimates.

Just say you don't care. Don't make up shit to fit the narrative you want.

Well, look at Syria…

Russia took over how many US military bases? 3?

just because the last military flight left doesn’t mean we are done getting people out

it would serve some well to actually educate themselves about what is actually going on, what agreements are in place, and what the expectations are

for someone who has tried to ride the non-partisan fence so hard they got splinters in their taint, illy sure is working overtime to get a win here...odd, considering that EVERYONE in this thread has called this situation a clusterfuck

edit: i’m bothered just as much by the billions in military equipment that we left behind as i am anything else...our tax dollars now potentially “arming” terrorists

I just think the huge differences in reaction by some here from the Afghanistan situation vs say the Syria situation under Trump is very telling. And quite predictable. It was meltdown city about fucking over the Turks. Not so much about all the Afghani people we are fucking over. It's just typical partisan selective giving a damn bullshit. It was then (for Syria w/ Trump) and it is now.

"Hats off" to Uncle Joe.

Ya you should probably study up a little more on this.

They (the Taliban) have been pretty much breaking the agreements for the last several weeks. So there's that.

How are you expecting us to get more people out without anyone there to get them out? LOL it's all lip service. The people on the ground tell a very different story about the last few months than our President does.

i have 100% faith in our military and intelligence communities. not so much the administration.

9-11 was 20 years ago. we have had zero terrorist attacks since then. that is remarkable.

i have 100% faith in our military and intelligence communities. they will get the job done despite the clowns in washington.

It has been really cool to see the stories of ex military taking privately funded trips to rescue 10s of thousands of the Afghani people. Risking their lives when they really aren't obligated to, but feel they have to because they are the ones who looked many of those same people in the eyes and said we wouldn't abandon them.
