You're friends with an astute person from another country who has a basic understanding of the American political system.
That friend asks you, why is it the conservatives who want to be liberal in terms of the virus and the liberals who want to be conservative?
As an American, how do you answer your friend?
one side tends to support science, the other not as much

I think the answer is that he’s confusing Trumpistas and conservatives

No chance I'd let Americans into my country without quarantine until at least the Fall.

Birx: You can't tell who has the virus and many people don't show symptoms.

Also Birx: People who don't feel well won't go to church.

I fear we are going to see some ugly numbers in about 12-20 days

We want the numbers to go slightly up though, right?

Is the end goal to prevent as many people from getting it as possible until there's a vaccine, or is it to not overwhelm the healthcare system?

The current plan in most states seems to be when the numbers dip a bit, open more stuff, wait a few weeks, and open more if they dip again. That seems to make sense.

Why would you want the numbers to go up?

I dont think we should ever want the numbers to go up. We might expect them top but i dont see a benefit of rising numbers.

I've said it since the beginning of the "task force", Fauci and Birx are brilliant and yet they say and do stupid things. I know that's pretty much true of every "brilliant" person.
That was something I started to let sink in way too late in my life, that it's possible for people who are a lot smarter than me - to be dumber than me in many ways too.

I’m a data scientist at the University of San Francisco and teach courses online in machine learning for fast.ai. In late March, I decided to use public mask-wearing as a case study to show my students how to combine and analyze diverse types of data and evidence.

Much to my surprise, I discovered that the evidence for wearing masks in public was very strong. It appeared that universal mask-wearing could be one of the most important tools in tackling the spread of COVID-19. Yet the people around me weren’t wearing masks and health organizations in the U.S. weren’t recommending their use.
