And Bama goes down 72-68 to Iona.

Damnit, was really looking forward to playing Alabama. This tournament is now three trash games.

Belmont tops Drake. They have a very good Center that would be a nice test for Dave…

Looks like a "watch basketball all day while pretending to work" kinda day today. Times are CT:
Baylor vs. Michigan State 10am ESPN
Dayton vs. Kansas 12:30am ESPN
Syracuse vs. Auburn 3:30pm ESPN2
No interesting games in the 6pm slot so Xavier vs. Va. Tech on ESPN2 or North Florida vs. Kentucky on SECN will have to do.
Iowa State vs. Memphis 8pm ESPN. Iowa State looked really good against Xavier. It would be good for the Big 12 if they were back to being a tourney caliber team again.
Duke vs. Gonzaga 9:30pm ESPN.

Bummed we dont get Bama as well but it means we can continue to get bench guys plenty of minutes over the 3 games in 4 day stretch.

Makes for an unusually soft schedule. @Colorado is now our most difficult game before conference play starts?

We may well go into that UK game with a chance to tie or take the lead.

I think @St. John's Dec. 3rd to open the new arena at Belmont Park will be KU's toughest game before the UK game. St. John's is better than Colorado.

https://redstormsports.com/news/2021/7/ ... arena.aspx

UK has one more tough non-con game left against Ohio State and then 2 ranked conference games at home vs. #15 Tennessee and @#19 Auburn while Kansas has no ranked games before the UK match up. Assuming that KU is undefeated at the time, if UK drops 2 games then it is to tie and if they drop 3 it will be to take the lead.

Also, what is college basketball *doing* with these Gonzaga start times (UCLA and Duke)? It’s almost like the NCAA doesn’t give a shit about growing the sport.

Michigan State giving Baylor all they can handle after Sparty beat a very good UConn team yesterday. That might turn into a very good win for Kansas.

Yeah, I wasn't really thrilled with the schedule to begin with. Very soft non conference schedule.

With so many new players, I don't mind. Playing a harder schedule doesn't seem to make any difference come tourney time. Go undefeated in non-con and win the Big 12 and KU will be a #1 seed.

I understand you have to schedule these things way ahead, and there are rules about how often you can be in any particular tournament, etc., but I just don't know what about this stupid Orlando field made us think this tournament was a good idea.

That's all well and good, but as time has gone on I care less about those things than I do about having cool games to watch.

Bama holds serve and we play against one of the more interesting/innovative coaches in the country.

Instead it is possible Pitino has something going and makes a legit squad out of Iona and makes the ncaa tournament.

Agreed. And North Texas won a game in the ncaa tourney last year.

I just like to see Kansas play well, win and get players minutes and experience so they are ready for the tourney.

No one doubts Pitino's bona fides as a coach.

But I (like many!) think Oats is on the short list if we need someone in the next 4-8 years. While that's looking less and less likely, it was still a matchup I very much wanted to see.

Pitino is a scum bag, but the guy can coach.

We're clearly on the same page here. As you mentioned in your other post, I'm more interested in watching good games instead of beating up on the little sisters of the poor. Ideally we play 5-7 Top 40 schools in the non conference with 2-3 of those being Top 15 schools.

Some of these non conference tournaments are complete garbage. I wish KU would just cycle through Maui, NIT, Atlantis and something in Las Vegas. Basically great travel destinations for fans with quality teams.

Also wish the Champions Classic was a 2 game event (i.e. bracket)
