DNC Day 4: With Kamala Harris’s Acceptance Speech, the Democrats Are No Longer Afraid of Themselves
https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/p ... ce-speech/
I found myself surprised at how what I thought would quickly be a very stupid metaphor - 2024 Dems as '07-'08 'Hawks - ends up holding up, at least as to the period from Harris's damage control in the moments after Biden lost the debate* up until now.
The Dems are outrageously talented, abundantly varied and - against EVERYTHING we know (thought we knew?) about Dems - manifestly cohesive.
And, to bring back our 'Hawks, they can play any style. They can win in the 50s and in the 90s.
Lord knows there's some shit heading down the river, and this moment might well be the 40-12 lead over UNC.
That said, while I'm expecting some heart-in-throat moments, maybe even overtime in the championship game (artificial as it may be), for the first time in this Trumpian period of our history it appears that the pro-Democracy side of things is actually GOING to put its very best foot forward.
Such that failing to stop Trump at this point will be on the people, not the party.

As to this last part, about what Charlie Pierce calls the "leadership cadre", or bench, of the Democratic Party - I was texting last night with someone familiar to, but gone from, these parts.[...]
Vice President Kamala Harris’s acceptance speech was not lyrical. We already had lyrical with the Obamas. And it was not folksy and jovial. We already had folksy and jovial with Tim Walz—even Santa Claus isn’t as folksy and jovial as Tim Walz. But it was strong and direct and delivered what it needed to deliver with great clarity and not a little power. There was a long biographical section at the start that dragged a little bit but nonetheless drew a stark emotional contrast with her opponent, whose biography is littered with the abandoned husks of human decency. But about midway through, she caught the prosecutor’s beam, and that seemed to energize her to a point beyond which few people had ever seen before.
That passage led into a vivid, lucid one on foreign policy in which Harris emphasized the role she had played in several of the current administration’s policies overseas. It included a strong defense of the role this country and NATO have played in supporting Ukraine. And, when it came to the ongoing slaughter in Gaza, Harris went beyond what the current president has said.Fellow Americans, this election is not only the most important of our lives; it is one of the most important in the life of our nation. In many ways, Donald Trump is an unserious man. But the consequences—but the consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serious.
Consider—consider not only the chaos and calamity when he was in office but also the gravity of what has happened since he lost the last election. Donald Trump tried to throw away your votes. When he failed, he sent an armed mob to the U.S. Capitol, where they assaulted law-enforcement officers. When politicians in his own party begged him to call off the mob and send help, he did the opposite—he fanned the flames. And now, for an entirely different set of crimes, he was found guilty of fraud by a jury of everyday Americans, and separately—and separately found liable for committing sexual abuse. And consider—consider what he intends to do if we give him power again. Consider his explicit intent to set free violent extremists who assaulted those law-enforcement officers at the Capitol.
His explicit intent to jail journalists, political opponents, and anyone he sees as the enemy. His explicit intent to deploy our active duty military against our own citizens. Consider—consider the power he will have, especially after the U.S. Supreme Court just ruled that he would be immune from criminal prosecution. Just imagine Donald Trump with no guardrails, and how he would use the immense powers of the presidency of the United States. Not to improve your life, not to strengthen our national security, but to serve the only client he has ever had: himself.
And we know, and we know what a second Trump term would look like. It’s all laid out in Project 2025, written by his closest advisers. And its sum total is to pull our country back to the past. But America, we are not going back. We are not going back. We are not going back.
There is no Obama poetry in that passage, no “ask not” Sorensenian thunderclaps. But as a statement of what must be done, as an opening statement to the jury of American voters, it was a formidable demand of Americans as jurors, which, ultimately, as my friend Glenn Kirschner endlessly reminds us, is what voters really are, especially this time around.
This is a party that has produced a leadership cadre that was formed not in the fearful shadow of Republican ascendancy but in the fierce reaction to Republican recklessness, Republican incompetence, and, now, finally, Republican insanity. It is a leadership group that understands the complicity the party had in the 2008 economic catastrophe. (Senator Professor Warren got one of the warmest receptions of any of the undercard speakers here.) It understands the complicity the party bore in the disastrous war in Iraq. And it is a cadre forged and galvanized in the resistance to what happened to the country in the previous administration. Ultimately, we saw a Democratic party that is no longer afraid of itself, that no longer doubts its own patriotism, its own religious and moral values, and its own commitment to diversity, because it has been told to do so by an implacable political opposition and by its own more timorous members. That party has chosen its very first candidate. Let the balloons fall where they may. With respect to the war in Gaza, President Biden and I are working around the clock, because now is the time to get a hostage deal and a cease-fire deal done. And let me be clear. And let me be clear. I will always stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself, and I will always ensure Israel has the ability to defend itself, because the people of Israel must never again face the horror that a terrorist organization called Hamas caused on Oct. 7, including unspeakable sexual violence and the massacre of young people at a music festival.
At the same time, what has happened in Gaza over the past ten months is devastating. So many innocent lives lost. Desperate, hungry people fleeing for safety, over and over again. The scale of suffering is heartbreaking. President Biden and I are working to end this war, such that Israel is secure, the hostages are released, the suffering in Gaza ends, and the Palestinian people can realize their right to dignity, security, freedom, and self-determination.
It’s not everything. After all, we’re still arming the Netanyahu regime. A week ago, we agreed to send fifty more fighter jets to Israel so Netanyahu can continue his air war against a people who have no air force. But to see the words Palestinian and self-determination so close together in one speech by a Democratic nominee is, if not a ray of sunshine, certainly a brightening in the endless clouds.

I would like to see them debate as well. I do agree with Trump in avoiding a stacked deck. The "mainstream" media has proven time and again that they won't play fair, and, I believe Giggles declined to participate in a debate on his terms, which is wise, because every time she opens her mouth, we see, yet again, that there is very little going on in her head.twocoach wrote: ↑Fri Aug 23, 2024 11:06 amI hope we get a chance to find out who is right or wrong but I doubt we will. Did you think the last debate on CNN was fair?
( i.e. the moment we all saw Biden wasn't in good enough health to lead another 4 years )

Re: DNC
(The last debate, as conducted and as analyzed afterwards, was highly unfair, in that - as has become commonplace - the supposed "mainstream" media failed to hold Trump to remotely the same standards to which his opponents are held. And that failure has put us at the brink.)

I, on the other hand, actually remember CNN lobbing softball after softball at Trump while allowing him to spew a firehose of lies without being called on it at all in the debate vs. Joe Biden.
So yeah, miss me with your made up BS.

You keep telling yourself whatever makes you happy.
We know that is the orientation of your worldview.
I don't put much stock in whether you consider media coverage of the candidates to be fair or unfair, because the unfairness starts with the media's failure to hold Trump accountable for his firehose of lies, and you care as much about objective truth and reality as do your candidate and party.

Re: DNC
I wasn't referring to the CNN debate. It is evident from the interviews he grants that they are not going to play fair. Trump demolished Biden because he refused to answer the questions they posed and provided the answers to questions he wanted to be asked. I thought it was a pretty solid strategy, and it obviously worked.twocoach wrote: ↑Fri Aug 23, 2024 12:04 pmCool story.JKLivin wrote: ↑Fri Aug 23, 2024 11:50 amI would like to see them debate as well. Speaking of spewing lies, Giggles has an atrocious track record to work from and has failed miserably at the one job she had, which was as Border Czar. She lies every time she opens her mouth and tries to reframe her performance as positive in any way.

Re: DNC
As I said in another reply, I thought Trump MADE it fair by refusing to answer the loaded questions they posed and instead giving answers to questions he wanted to be asked. It was obvious that Biden had been fed a script and was prepared to respond to scripted questions and answers, and it fried his circuits while Trump was able to get his message across. Pretty savvy, IMHO.pdub wrote: ↑Fri Aug 23, 2024 11:53 am "I would like to see them debate as well. I do agree with Trump in avoiding a stacked deck. https://x.com/timodc/status/18268313225 ... q_-8Yt1KMAIf the Republicans had nominated a person who offered minimal lip service to American values, was not a criminal, & didn’t instigate an attack on the Capitol, 80% of Kamala’s speech would’ve been moot.
Seems like nominating someone who couldn’t clear that bar was a mistake.
