So...wut now?
Re: So...wut now?
The vast majority of people, young/old rich/poor black/white, are mainly concerned with things that benefit them personally. That's ok. It's human nature to do so. The problem is when 1 group has more power to influence things to benefit themselves.
Re: So...wut now?
This is the argument made ALL of the time. But it's not true.
Japhy is NOT eloquent.
Also, both Vermont and Colorado have broached the subject of statewide single-payer health care over the past five years, and both balked at the cost. One of the things people don't realize is that the costs associated with becoming a health professional in this country and particularly becoming a physician make the idea of implementing a system like (name-a-country's) financially impossible.
Honestly, look at the costs -- financial and temporal -- associated with becoming a physician in the United States versus the costs in, say, Great Britain. And then, look at how generational preferences in career choices have already shifted. In Japhy and Feral's generation, the best and the brightest chose STEM careers -- medicine, engineering, etc. Now, the best and the brightest choose finance and business (and yes, there are numbers to back this up). What do you think is going to happen to the pool of those willing to becoming medical professionals, if you tell them that they're going to have to work, more or less, directly for the government, with all that that entails? And then ask what will happen to those who have already paid the steep price to become medical professionals, if you tell them they're going to have to work, more or less, directly for the government? Average student loan debt for physicians today is well into the six figures. And they don't get to the point where they can earn real money until looong after most other professionals. And now you want to pay them based on Medicare reimbursement rates but shrunken by the power of a federal monopsony?
Good luck with that.

Re: So...wut now?
all that aside, I wish there was some way to trade in my business degree for a STEM one.
Re: So...wut now?
The sue happy nature of this country has increased insurance costs for physicians to astronomical levels. Physicians are required to carry malpractice insurance with huge premiums in order to practice. Another, often overlooked, factor for driving up healthcare costs which isnt addressed by the single payer system

If you are suggesting that the place to begin managing high healthcare cost in this country is to begin with managing (somewhat artificially**) the high cost of higher education then I am in full agreement. Other countries have figure this out. We need to recognize that whatever we are doing is not working, hasn't been for at least a century.DCHawk1 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2020 2:18 pm Average student loan debt for physicians today is well into the six figures. **The solution is NOT to throw more money into the student loan program - that is part of the problem, not part of the solution. Colleges and Universities, especially non-State run ones, have become so reliant on the student loans for their funding that they just keep jacking up prices and expecting the the Govt to step in and fund the increases. That's an ostensibly capitalist system which is being kept alive by an ostensibly socialist system.
Re: So...wut now?
This is a lie coming from the same people who have been lying to you that the path to prosperity is through trickle-down economics. A convenient scapegoat but one not supported by facts.
Re: So...wut now?
Even getting divorced has become a big fucking business in America. Our courts are a joke.

My sister, who has a practice and who has never been sued for malpractice, says fuck you. So does my best friends dad, a surgeon with a private practice. So does my cousin with a private practice.

Yes, but that is only part of the problem. The rest is temporal.zsn wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2020 2:59 pmIf you are suggesting that the place to begin managing high healthcare cost in this country is to begin with managing (somewhat artificially**) the high cost of higher education then I am in full agreement. Re: So...wut now?
We already worked this out. We are importing our doctors from Asia now and they are happy to have US citizenship and live in the greatest country in the world. Their kids are going to engineering grad school.
Now our best and brightest can focus on gaming the financial markets and crashing the economy for profit.
But I fear we have gotten off topic. Trump's penchant for having nothing but toadies in key government positions so that he hears nothing but an echo of his own twisted thoughts is getting to be a problem for the management of the country....oh no....how did this happen? The Democrat's threat to elect an ugly woman for president is to blame, I am so glad trump was sent by God and has made America great again.

Being in an industry doesnt make you an expert in all the problems within that industry. I work at a bank, that doesnt make me an expert on all of the driving factors to costs, fees and policies in the banking industry. Heck, the workplace is one of the best places to overhear blatantly wrong information and assumptions about your own industry.TDub wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2020 3:03 pmMy sister, who has a practice and who has never been sued for malpractice, says fuck you. Im pretty sure she is acutely aware of the premiums she has to personally pay. As well as the increase in those premiums over the last 15 years.twocoach wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2020 3:36 pmBeing in an industry doesnt make you an expert in all the problems within that industry. Re: So...wut now?
Why would I disagree with him? I do not have relevant I formation about the primary factors affecting rising insurance costs. In my 5 seconds of research right now, however, I have come across studies that do not support TDub's family opinions and instead cited growing population, aging seniors, disease prevalence/incidence, medical service utilization and service price & intensity as the drivers of rising costs. But hey, a sister ranting over Christmas dinner is probably a more reliable source. Not one of the studies I found mentioned litigation from the sue-happy folks as a driver in rising health insurance costs.IllinoisJayhawk wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2020 3:40 pm JFC....just arguing to argue with your select few targets.

Re: So...wut now?
Yes.
You should compare the doctors we import from Asia (India in particular) with those the UK imports.
It's...uhhh...not much of a comparison.

Just find me a link to some sort of study that believes that frivolous litigation is a key factor in rising insurance premiums and I will happily apologize for being wrong.
The closest I'd get to believing it's somewhat of a factor is that doctors are ordering more unnecessary, expensive treats not because they think they need to be done but because they want to cover their asses in case they are sued.
Re: So...wut now?
So we agree, if we can't grow doctors here then we can just import them from low wage countries like we do coffee and chocolate.DCHawk1 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2020 4:00 pmYes.
