So, about 2 hours later, we head down to the pool and hot tub. (I am confident my wife, 2 teenagers and I were louder than the families)

We swim for a bit, and then asked the group from earlier if we can take over the hot tub, and they graciously allowed us. They thanked me for being on their side earlier, and I told them I try to stay on the side of right.

So, we are hot rubbing, and there are a brother and sister...maybe 7-9 years old...pestering us. My wife asks where their parents are, and they said they are with their grandpa, and they don't remember the room number. They were sweet kids, but it was obvious that they were attention starved.

After about an hour and a half, and not being able to shake these kids, I wanna know where grandpa is. One of the people at the pool, who also was concerned, pointed out the room that they saw the kids go in and out of a few times. This lady says that the kids had been at the pool unattended for several hours. It was around 11 pm at this point.

So, I go over to the room and knock on the door. I can see a heavy set older man raising up out of a chair, watching TV.

He asks what I want and I asked him why he isn't keeping an eye on these kids. The little boy went past me and into the room. The old guy asked me where the girl is. I told him that really isnt something he should have to ask a stranger at a motel....and once again ask him how in the world he would put these children at risk in this way.

He told me to mind my own fucking business and stepped up. I told him if I make it more my business, we are going to move some furniture and he will pray that the cops come quick. The little girl appeared, and the old man cussed me out and slammed his door.

The police came a few minutes later and took statements. They cuffed this guy, and CPS took the kids. Turns out the father of the kids tried to kill their mom a few days earlier, and his dad took the kids to get away from CPS in Phoenix.

I am, in person very rarely aggressive...but from the start, this situation just felt bad. I suppose past training and experience made it impossible for me to just let it go, and I am glad I did not.

Plano gets up around 8 am, and I head out to get coffee and breakfast.
All is normal, I come back, we eat, pack and head down to the car.

As soon as we exit the building, there are 7 people standing around, and are clearly shaken.

While I was in the room, someone shattered the windows in all of the cars that were parked in handicapped spots. They threw large rocks at the cars.

One of the guys that was standing there owned one of the cars, and he said the police had just left and they picked up the guy who did it. He said the guy was not anyone he recognized, skinny white dude with a Dodgers cap.

We couldn't get out of Flagstaff fast enough.

I have never seen this much action in a long fucking time.

Are we really sure Plano is with his family? I've been to Palm Springs many times and I can tell you there are a lot of bear exclusive motels and resorts there from just driving and walking around.

Just that one night.
The rest of the trip has been awesome.

Flagstaff is off my travel radar for life.

i’m sure nobody cares but me, but the most fecund (reproductively successsful) known population of desert tortoises lives right outside of Palm Springs...right in the midst of all those cancer-causing wind turbines

Seriously? I may want to go check that out today.

Are they feasting on bald eagle carcasses?

lol, doubtful

and i don’t think you can access the colony (legally). the land is privately owned, i believe

pretty crazy juxtaposition...i’ve got some cool pics of tortoise dens literally at the foot of turbines (i helped with a bit of research on desert tortoises in grad school). my wife actually found a beautiful Red Diamond Rattlesnake (Crotalus ruber) on one of the days we were visiting that particular colony, and another member of our group found a sidewinder further down in the valley. it’s such a good spot for reptiles

the only redeeming quality about Flagstaff, other than Mt. Elden, is Mike and Ronda’s restaurant (if it’s even still there)
