Absolutely. And they have. Shaun King has a huge following and there is a lot of questions about his true race. His mom is white, his dad is mixed or light skinned according to him, but some black people from his hometown area say his dad is white (the dad listed on his birth certificate is white, but he claims that's not his real dad...i don't think his mom has ever publicly addressed it nor should she have to).

There is a lot of trust that has to be rebuilt before the black comminuty will have enough faith in white people to be "leaders" of their movement. For now, the best thing for white people to do is support the black community AND listen...and by listen I mean listen without feeling defensive or needing to say "ya but".

Could be more telling of the chair than the man.
Also the expectations associated with the chair, which are fantastical.

that's a good one. Heck, we still hear his name a lot.

and while he was astutely outspoken, he was also just so volatile.

RIP even if it was kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

It is certainly time for younger leaders. Growing up with the Gen X, it was clear that they lacked commitment. It was too easy to come of age post-Vietnam, bitch about abstract Apartheid outrages, conform and thrive while the seed corn of education, infrastructure and public service withered away. Insert Roman analogy here.
The current coming of age generation is alive to diversity and inclusion and has inherited a worse set of expectations and planetary issues than any other. They must set aside the expedient bandages and counsel of those who brought us thus and start to define a new path. Too many of leaders of my generation were born into wealth and simply rigged the game against meritocracy. And the arrogant mediocrity that breeds failure still thrives.

When MLK died, he was exceedingly unpopular.
Obviously history has treated him much better.

~ 2010-2011 during a casual conversation when MLK's name came up, our (now) former broker/financial advisor (from Arkansas) said to a lawyer I once slept with, : "You mean that guy who caused all that trouble?", we fired her almost instantly.

I'd be curious to hear more details about how unpopular MLK was.

I'm guessing it was mostly just unpopular among "the establishment?"

He was a very intelligent man that played up the gangsta side of him to sell records. Unfortunately he got caught up in it and it got him killed. There is some interesting theories out there including one that says the govt killed him in order to prevent him from becoming an MLK type figure. While I dont believe that to be true, why havent they solves his murder? Lots of witnesses, lots of information and still no real answer. He had the voice, the spirit, and the ability to get people to listen and follow him.

It's not helpful for him that he's Barry Sanders and the DNC are the Detroit Lions. He separates from them and he watches them go down in flames.
