I think both transfer guards will be great in their roles. But the safe bet is that Och Jalen CB and DMac all average 10+pts (similar or more than last year)....CB averaged 9.7pts last year and didn't shoot very well....he's bound to get that average up into the 40s from 3 as he gets more comfortable out there (which he will). I think this is the CB breakout year. That's my (latest) semi hot take for the summer.

I don't specifically remember that hot take, but definitely sounds right up my alley.

You remember why? Because i thought we'd play 4 guards and Dok? I hope it was because i was high on Mitch or DMac, but that seems doubtful. Although maybe i was still riding the Jamari Traylor high and was hoping Mitch would become White Mari. Or maybe i thought Self would play DMac and Dok together because DMac was a McDs AA and i didn't envision him on the bench (especially not for multiple years)?

The good news: if i trashed all 3 of the transfers in that offseason because i didn't have faith then i have batted .667 for that season because 2 of the 3 were awful....and as good as Dedric was individually, that was one of the worst Self teams we've had once Dok went down. Dedric had a way of having a double double and appearing to impact the outcome of the game very little when it mattered the most.

But let's be real, CB as a top 4 player and/or averaging 10pts+ a game is not really a hot take. He's probably 6th best player without making any improvements this off season (which would be a HOT take itself). CB will benefit from guys like Remy and Yesufu being on the floor with him. He's a guy who has already scored 30pts in a game at Kansas. Had 14 games in double figures last year. Not sure why he'd suddenly fall off? I know the off season is for being excited about the unknowns, but the unknown i am most excited about is to see how much our 4 returning starters have improved since the USC game.

(last offseason people said TGF was an NBA caliber player....talk about a hot take)

I think Braun looses some minutes to competition from the bench but ultimately is our 5th best player. Last year Bryce Thompson/Grant Foster didn't pan out to really compete for those minutes...but this year we'll have a collection of talent off the bench.

Something like:

Ochai 15.3 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 45% FG
DMac 14.4 PPG, 7.1 RPG, 53% FG
Remy 13.3 PPG, 4.5 APG, 44% FG
Jalen 12.9 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 46% FG
Braun 8.8 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 41% FG

Then you have just so many variables with Harris, Yesufu, Coleman Lands, Cuffe and Pettiford. Not to mention the bigs with Lighfoot, Adams, Clemence, Martin.

and optimistically I’ll say Joe is the kinda player who likes it that folks are sleeping on Joe

Yesufu could come out and take Braun's spot - I wouldn't be shocked.
I still think the Overland Park kid wins out.

Just for reference:

Remy took 14 shots a game last year to average 19pts.

Och took 12 shots a game last year to average 14pts.

Jalen took 9 shots a game last year to average 12pts.

DMac took 10 shots a game last year to average 13pts.

CB took 8 shots a game last year to average 10pts.

Yesufu took 10 shots a game last year to average 13pts.

He only started 7 of 31 games at freaking Drake. Only averaged 24mpg. Full disclosure they were the last 7 games and he played awesome in that stretch. Granted he took over 20shots 3 times in that stretch which won't ever happen at Kansas.

CB averaged 30mpg at KANSAS.

Big difference.

Talk about a hot take. CB getting beaten out Yesufu would be a total surprise to me. Yesufu needs to worry about beating out Harris for minutes before he focuses on beating out a 6'6 returning starter. We always seem to only think about these battles in terms of individual offensive ability, when in reality defense matters just as much to Self.

I think the bottoming out of capable players off the bench last year boosted minutes for the starting five.

I also think Braun's the most vulnerable to loosing those minutes of our guys expected to start -- so if even just one of the guys I mentioned is better than Bryce Thompson of last season, I'm guessing Braun's 2021-22 minutes dip.

( and as per defense, Braun isn't a particularly good defender )

Agree there....but imo it'll much more likely be from 1 of the incoming bigs being good enough to play alongside DMac which will result in Och sliding to the 2 (is he already the 2 or is CB?) and Jalen playing the 3. Not us playing Remy and Yesufu together.

Possibly?
I just am not sold on Clemence or Adams as freshmen coming in and taking that spot. And Cam Martin is a DII transfer.

I'm not a guy who thinks it's 4 out, 1 in forever - Self will play his best guys - but I think we'll see that this season -- anyways, Jalen has the size for a power forward -- he's not much smaller than any of the freshmen.

The hope is that Yesufu is the USC Yesufu and can also get minutes at the backup PG--the part of his game he has been working on this offseason. And then Harris transfers to mizzou.

Fwiw "USC Yesufu" went 8 for 22 and his team lost by 16pts.

I think he will be a fantastic backup to Remy next year and will be ready to captain the ship in 22-23. I prefer him over Harris immensely.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Braun will be good, and will still start, at least for the beginning of the season.

He’s more of a spot up shooter. Joe’s more of a score off the bounce guy.

While Braun starts, maybe he’ll have a little shorter leash compared to last year. Joe should hopefully be an offensive spark either way, get the ball moving and in the paint if things get stagnant

"score off the bounce guy....hopefully be an offensive spark either way, get the ball moving and in the paint if things get stagnant..."

Remy will be that guy.
But Self's been known to play two of those guys.

Yeah.

I don’t think it’s any coincidence Self went out and swapped a bunch of bigger wing types for a bunch of smaller on the ball types.
