2022-2023 Lineup
Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
I am probably alone here... But I also don't think Wilson will be here next year. Have we ever had a player test the waters and still be around two seasons later?

Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
Probably not, but that's a little tricky given that the multiple combine rule has been in place for only the last 6 seasons, but only 5 combines because 2020 was canceled.
I do believe Och would have been our first, though.
Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
Thing is, even in the last six years, we have had players projected late second round or worse leave early. We haven't had guys come back two years after testing. So I am guessing pretty much solely on that.
Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
Yeah, Jalen doesn’t look ready to leave, but there’s a lot of factors besides that.
And dunno if a super senior will be stoked to return for a possible reserve role.

Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
Bear in mind, though, that Jalen declaring had pretty much everything to do with the new deadline rules just put in place last season. And, the new rule that you can still come back if not drafted.
He wasn't top 100 last year and he's not top 100 right now.
Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
I agree with CnB in that I think Wilson is a unique case and the climate around declaring and returning to school is changing. Unless Wilson blows up in March, I think he'll be back next year.

Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
I’m not sure that we’ve ever seen Wilson put the ball in the floor in the half court as much as he did last night with Och out, and he was a turnover machine.
Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
Jalen’s ceiling tho, and his pro potential, is largely if he can get a ball-on-the-floor game going.
He already has above average handles for a tweener forward. That’s prob what might make him stand out.
Unless he otherwise suddenly becomes a lights out shooter, and/or athletic.

i don't think you stand out for being above average at one thing.
I only came to kick some ass...

Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
Yeah, and I'm not buying the above average handles, anyway. He can dribble the ball down the court quickly in transition, but that's like a bare minimum skill these days in the NBA for the position. A lot of 5's are doing that now.
Maybe Jalen is a little like Dave where if you cut and paste all the good stuff, he looks like an NBA prospect.

Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
Name one other 3/4 type who could grab a bored and start the fast break himself?
Maybe Josh Jackson? Maybe Marcus Morris?

Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
And I realize Jalen hasn’t been great about putting the ball down and getting to the rim in the half court, st least yet.
I just said I think that’s his ceiling.
Just cuz he turned it over a bunch doing it last night doesn’t mean he can’t be more effective about it in the long run

Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
But for a 6'8 sophomore, Jalen has good handles.
Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
I don’t disagree. Dunno if he’ll ever be.
If he does ever get there, it’s cuz his handles, jumper, and/or some other something has come a long way.
That doesn’t mean he can’t be a really good college player tho, and I feel like we haven’t even seen his ceiling yet here.

Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
Yeah, maybe those guys too. Wiggins hardly had ball skills at age 18 tho, and Julian was just as likely to dribble off his foot.
So far tho, we’ve named 4 lotto picks. Not bad company for Jalen to be compared to.

Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
Those guys have all had more to offer than being able to dribble the ball down the court, though. And for most of them, great athleticism.
Jalen's game is so far below the rim that I think his only key in is significantly improved 3 point shooting. His current good stuff is just so common at the NBA level, even if it sticks out at KU.

Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
Yeah, all those dudes are considerably more athletic. (Wiggins and JJ in particular prob had more dunks in one game than Jalen’s had his entire career)
But yeah, his handles, though perhaps above average for a college tweener, is nothing special by league standards
